Sandbox games tap into your inner child. They allow you to interact creatively with tons of objects in the game. You don’t have any set goals or objectives, rather, you have the freedom to explore your surroundings as you please. Often, sandbox games will allow you to build anything you want as well, much like Minecraft. Because sandbox games focus on creativity, we hope the games we expect to see in 2024 will do the same. Here are some of the most anticipated sandbox games of 2024 you won’t want to miss.

5. Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon's Dogma 2 - Main Trailer | PS5 Games

First up, we have Dragon’s Dogma 2, a sequel to Dragon’s Dogma (2012). It’s an upcoming single-player, narrative-driven action RPG currently being developed by Capcom that challenges you to choose your own experience. While the sequel is set in the same universe as the original, its events will take place on a parallel timeline in the human lands of Vermund and the beastren nation of Battahi. Players will take charge of the main protagonist’s role, the Arisen. In tow are the Pawns, otherwise companions sworn to serve the Arisen.

While the story remains in breadcrumbs, waiting to be gobbled up, we speculate that it’ll intertwine its strings around geographic and political intrigue. If you’ve played the original, you’ll surely see lots of similarities and features like monsters, armor, magic, and collectable items. But much will have changed, too, given the more than decade-long time frame between releases. You’ll definitely run into some new monsters and vocations, as well as a new playable humanoid race.

So, if you’re curious about what Western and JRPG elements infused into one another might look like. Or, if you want to enjoy compelling dialogue, exciting combat, and fast gameplay galloping across a dark, mysterious world, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is for you.

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, & PC

Release Date: March 22, 2024

4. Palworld

Palworld - Reveal Trailer | Summer Game Fest 2023

Alternatively, consider the monster-catching, survival and crafting game Palworld, where every emotion it’ll stir up screams joy. It sounds a lot like Pokemon, but the upcoming game plans to add various mechanics from other genres to stand out from the crowd. In fact, it’s marketed as a “fusion of genres,” which could possibly redefine gaming, so our expectations are definitely at a prime high.

You’ll have over 100 unique pals to explore and capture. Meanwhile, you can fight bosses and build protective bases. To come out on top, you’ll need to train your pals for battle. But you can also use them to run quick errands for you with a widely accessible range of weapons, including bows, spears, rocket launchers, and assault rifles. It’s about to get violent, for sure, unlike Pokemon, which tries to avoid coloring outside the lines.

Still, the similarities are overwhelming, including weakening a prospective boss or pal and capturing them by throwing a sphere. Hopefully, Palworld does just enough to offer a unique experience we haven’t seen before.

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, & PC

3. Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws: Official World Premiere Trailer

Star Wars fans, where are you at? Star Wars Outlaws is an upcoming action-adventure set in the Star Wars universe. It takes place between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and the Return of the Jedi. Get ready to experience an original story, albeit one that centers a tad bit more on the life of an outlaw.

You’ll get into intense action moments, fighting adversaries, stealing valuables, and using your smarts to escape tight spots. Ubisoft claims it’ll be the “first-ever open-world Star Wars game,” so it’s definitely exciting to explore the galaxies, bustling cities, and outdoor landscapes at your pleasure. But remember, you’ll quickly become the galaxy’s most wanted, so provided you can harvest the bright side of a life of crime, you’ll be good to go.

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, & PC

Release Date: 2024

2. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League | Official Justice League Trailer - “No More Heroes”

Tagged as the sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an upcoming action shooter you won’t want to miss. It ties together free-form exploration, enhanced traversal, melee combat, and gunplay all in one. The Suicide Squad team has to be the most diverse task force out there. Harley Quinn, King Shark, Captain Boomerang, and Deadshot come together once again to do the impossible. They must kill the Justice League and save the world.

It’s exciting to see how each character comes to life. Even more so, the expansive and dynamic open-world metropolis you’ll be weaving your way in and out of. And even though the first impressions of the gameplay have been underwhelming, we’re still holding on to the hope that when it launches, it’ll blow our minds away.

1. Skull & Bones

Skull and Bones: The Game Awards Trailer

Tough as old boots, Skull & Bones is on its way to make your life a living hell, but in ways you’ll be looking back fondly upon. It challenges you to make your own rules in a perilous world—to climb the ranks from a nobody to the most infamous pirate kingpin.

The biggest loot awaits. So, it’s up to you to team up with friends or sail the lawless sea solo. Cutthroat pirates, deadly sea monsters, rogue waves, and even supernatural threats will try to cut short your journey across a vast open world. But thanks to your crafting skills, you can build powerful warships that match your playstyle.

Drawing inspiration from the naval wars of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Skull & Bones is shaping up to become one of the best seafaring RPGs of the year. Can you brave the great seas? Will you survive the rite of passage to become a true pirate? There are only a few weeks left to find out.
