Doom Eternal in Best FPS Games on PlayStation 5

It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch has maintained a steady stream of family-friendly games. However, the platform is gradually accommodating more genres, including gore-ridden first-person shooters. Today, an overwhelming number of FPS games reign over on the Nintendo Switch. You only need to know where to look. Check out these best FPS games on Nintendo Switch in 2024 that you won’t want to miss out on.

5. Apex Legends

Apex Legends - Official Cinematic Launch Trailer

The popular battle royale Apex Legends ought to be at the top of your list of FPS games to play on the Nintendo Switch. It pits online players in the ultimate battle for glory and fame. It’s the best way to put your running and shooting skills to the test. Plus, you can team up in the squad-based battle royale, which heavily takes your teamwork skills into account.

With 25 heroes to choose from, each donning unique skills, you’ll be spoilt for choice over whom to go with. Rest assured, whatever your play style is, the classes and abilities featured cover it. Alongside exciting characters is perfect gunplay and excellent movement. You’ll never miss a beat because of the controls, leaving you legroom to rely solely on your grit and talent.

The best part about Apex Legends is the consistent updates that keep the gameplay fresh. That, and the easy-to-jump-into but hard-to-master regime established by now. As far as battle royales go, few games are as gorgeous or fluid as Apex Legends. If we’re talking about just shooter games, well, Overwatch 2 competes pretty close…

4. Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 Announce Cinematic | “Zero Hour”

The first-person and team-based shooter, Overwatch 2, has been an internet sensation for a while now. It gives you an eccentric roster of evolving heroes to pick from—30+ heroes, to be precise—and gives you room to team up with your best squadmates. Each hero has unique skills and moves, thus allowing you to experiment to your heart’s content.

Set on an optimistic future, Overwatch 2 is always a pleasant ride to jump into. It’s an all-in-good-fun type of game that focuses on delivering addictive, fast-paced action. Graphically, it’s unmatched by most, with slick and clean visuals vibrantly jumping off the screen. You can always jump back in, thanks to massive replayability and sheer fun. And, if you’re coming from Overwatch, well, prepare to enjoy even faster and more punishing gameplay.

3. Paladins: Champions of the Realm

Paladins: Champions of the Realm - Cinematic Trailer

Next up is Paladins: Champions of the Realm, an online hero shooter that sets camp atop fantasy environments and has over 50 customizable heroes to choose from. You gallivant across wildly diverse maps and game modes, each refreshing and championing Paladins’ colorful M.O. If you’re looking for a long-lasting FPS, Paladins: Champions of the Realm has you covered. Each run is a blast, with constant unlockables and level-up goodies to keep you going. Watch out for the addictive effect, though, especially with the eccentric mix of magic and guns.

Only some games effectively balance out all their heroes. However, Paladins: Champions of the Realm nails a well-balanced roster that you can tinker around with without feeling nudged in specific directions. You also put a heavy focus on teamwork, balancing out individual player roles and maximizing team synergy. Unfortunately, the story feels lacking, but that hardly detracts from its excellent deep customization and fast-paced multiplayer matches.

2. Metroid Prime Remastered

Metroid Prime Remastered - Reveal Trailer | Nintendo Direct 2023

Ready to walk in intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran’s shoes one more time? Metroid Prime Remastered returns to take you back to the wild shenanigans across space. Just as you remember, you’ll gallivant across space, unraveling dark secrets, exploring interconnected planets, and putting an end to the intergalactic threat from Phazon. As hostile as Metroid Prime Remastered’s alien planet is, you thrive on it, taking on extreme dangers and facing your nemesis head-on.

Further, Metroid Prime fans will be most thrilled to re-experience nostalgia on the Switch. Fortunately, the original outdated visuals have been ditched in favor of more intricate and vibrant graphics. Additionally, you can now use the dual-stick control for an even smoother and more fluid experience. Newcomers, too, will find the 15-hour narrative compelling as you explore moody atmospheres and masterful game design. You’ll unlock and upgrade new weapons and abilities while keeping busy with combat, puzzles, and platforming.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t include the Metroid Prime full trilogy, which barely makes sense given the Wii version had all three games. Still, re-experiencing a definitive classic with improvements on all fronts, from updated visuals to engaging gameplay, holds undeniable benefits.

1. Doom Eternal

DOOM Eternal - Release Date Trailer - Nintendo Switch

Hands down, Doom Eternal rocks. You play as the Slayer, whose job it is to hack and slash any demons that come his way. You’ll conquer enemies across dimensions, all in the final bid to save humanity. Doom Eternal adds even more demon variety, with unique abilities and attack patterns. It poses a more punishing challenge. The only thing the demons fear is you, though, so don’t worry too much.

Make no mistake: Doom Eternal is incredibly intense. Killing demons is, after all, not meant to be a walk in the park. The game understands this, too, giving you overwhelming weapons and encouraging you to experiment. It’s determined to transform you into the ultimate demon-killing machine, which, as grueling as it sounds, does culminate in a brutal yet utterly exhilarating experience.

Moreover, blasting demons into oblivion feels fantastic, with a varied-level design to keep you engaged. And when you want to take a breather, you absolutely can do it, often to take in the scenery, albeit usually demon guts spilled on the ground. Meanwhile, you can also take on unraveling the creepy environments’ intriguing secrets and platforming challenges. Every gameplay element feels balanced, with the cutscenes, action sequences, or puzzles coming in not a moment too soon.
