Best Adventure Games on PlayStation 5

The best adventure games are the ones you remember most, whether it’s the characters you grow attached to, the world that is bursting with charm, or the gameplay that always has a surprise, a new secret, or a skill to master. The stories, puzzles, and worldbuilding all come together to create an adventure you won’t soon forget, much like the ones in Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, and Red Dead Redemption 2

But PlayStation 5 has hundreds of games in its catalog. So, how do you pick the best adventure games on PlayStation 5 worth your time?

What is an Adventure Game?

Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2

An adventure game prioritizes memorable storytelling above all else. The best stories I’ve enjoyed have had a good balance of deep characters with unique personalities. Their initial morals and perspectives are challenged in the story, with moments when they make decisions that shape how they grow.

But the world also matters, depending on how immersive it is and whether it’s exciting to discover new places, as well as the puzzles that keep your brain active.

Wondering where your next adventure will take you? I can confirm that the following best adventure games on PlayStation 5 tell the most unforgettable stories.

10. Hogwarts Legacy

Even as a not-so-diehard fan of Harry Potter, I knew I had to play it as a game. I had to feel the panic when you’re in a tough spot, and you have to cast spells against the greatest wizards. Your wand is your weapon and protector, and Hogwarts Legacy lets you experience what that’s like.

But there’s more on offer here. I enjoyed exploring Hogwarts in the late 1800s. It felt familiar but also full of surprises. You even discover entirely new locations set in an immersive, open-world Harry Potter universe.

9. Red Dead Redemption 2

I probably wouldn’t have survived the Wild West. And while Red Dead Redemption 2 still had me overly cautious of the company I kept, at least I enjoyed an unforgettable story that will leave you drenched in tears.

So many emotions wash over you when playing Red Dead Redemption 2, where the stand-offs are just as anxiety-inducing as the few breaths your favorite characters take before they succumb to death.

8. The Last of Us Part I

I’m glad that the world, despite its global warming and war chaos, is still somewhat hanging on to some form of survivability. Because The Last of Us Part I is the last place I’d want to be stuck in.

Here’s yet another of the most unforgettable best adventure games on PlayStation 5 that doesn’t just treat you to intense shootouts but pairs it up with a gut-wrenching, post-apocalyptic story.

7. Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut

I follow a few travel influencers whose passports I imagine have run out of pages so many times they’ve lost count. People with wanderlust souls traveling all around the world. Not everyone has the chance to travel.

Even so, the best adventure games like Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut give you the opportunity to experience cultures far different from your own. While not entirely an accurate representation of feudal Japan, the mythologies and worldbuilding sometimes come pretty close to giving you a taste of life during the Mongol invasion.

6. God of War Ragnarok

Kratos isn’t my favorite Greek god. But over the God of War series, I’ve come to have a deep appreciation for his character arc. God of War Ragnarok is probably the height of his growth, dealing with grief, while also trying to be the best example to his son.

5. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

It’s very few of the 100+ hour open-world games that grab my attention as much as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Sure, the world is so massive, it’ll take you weeks or even months to exhaust all of the battles and puzzles it has to offer. But it’s time well spent, given how important the quest to defeat Sephiroth feels.

4. Elden Ring

If you want an adventure game on PlayStation 5 with lore so deep, you’ll be sinking time over on Reddit, talking memes and gameplay clips, check out Elden Ring. The single-player exploration in itself is immensely rewarding, but so are the multiplayer PvPs, fighting to hold the power of the Elden Ring and rule over the Lands Between.

3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

I’m a sucker for anything Marvel, and have always yearned for an action-adventure game that does Spider-Man justice. And with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, I can say with conviction that Sony has absolutely nailed it.

It’s the swinging across New York that makes Spider-Man different, and that mechanic has been implemented to provide satisfying immersion. But so is the story, ever so heartwarming and adding moments of deep reflection.

2. Baldur’s Gate 3

D&D is in the cinematic realm now, the Forgotten Realms built in 3D glory. As much as Baldur’s Gate 3 is pure cinema, it still feels like classic tabletop D&D with dice rolls that determine where the story goes.

It still feels intimate, with your group of friends embarking on dangerous quests that test your loyalty to one another. You have the freedom to choose your characters, and your choices shape who they become.

Meanwhile, the turn-based tactical battles keep your eye on the game, fine-tuning your build and looting every chance you get.

1. Horizon Forbidden West

The future is always portrayed as mechanical, but what if it also has nature and humanity return to their tribal nature? A post-apocalyptic world where the land is taunted by destructive storms and blight. Horizon Forbidden West has been an interesting adventure, often surprising in its ideas.

Even Aloy herself doesn’t have the answers for the state of the world, and she asks of you to help unravel the secrets behind the threats to human extinction. You’ll rally old and new allies, meet factions you forge alliances with, and face a new formidable enemy.
