Green Hell VR: 5 Best Tips for Beginners

Published

 on

Green Hell has just about found its way over to the world of VR, which can mean only one thing: the relentless Amazonian rain forest is on the prowl yet again, and it’ll be looking to harvest yet another batch of souls for its keep. So, if you did miss out on the opportunity to immerse in the tropical survival game back in 2019, then rest assured — Green Hell is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and better than ever.

Anyway, if you have recently picked up a copy of the VR iteration of Green Hell, then you’re going to need to onboard a few quick tips before you get started, if only to prevent yourself from being mauled to death by the first jaguar that crosses your path. Need we say more? Here are the five best words of advice we can offer you in 2023.

5. Make the First Day Count

To put it out there — Green Hell is not an easy game, even going by survival games’ standards. In fact, the first 24 in-game hours will give you a rough idea of what you’re getting yourself into, which can also be some of the toughest hours in the entire game altogether. That said, like most survival games, patience is vital, as more often than not, the perks will begin to tally up after several days of roughing out in the wild. Point is, though, if you simply can’t muster the courage to outlast the brutality of the jungle right off the bat, then chances are you won’t survive long enough to see your second sunrise.

So, how do you survive in the Green Hell — especially when all you’ve got to your name is a nifty smartwatch and a crafting journal? Well, for starters, you’re going to need a weapon—a Weak Spear, to be precise, as it will allow you to not only defend yourself against jungle beasts and roaming tribesmen, but also hunt for small game and fish down in the various streams and rivers. To get your hands on a spear, simply forage the local area for a Long Stick, and then open up the crafting journal to thread it together.

To give you an idea, you’ll want to have a weapon and a sturdy shelter built before the end of the first day. If you can reach the end of it and have a cooked fish in your belly and a makeshift cushion for your head, then you might just stand at chance and live long enough to see the following day.

4. Build a Shelter ASAP

Once you’ve managed to get your hands on a weapon, you’ll want to build a shelter, as this will give you the chance to not only boost your energy levels, but also save your progress. And believe us when we say — you’re going to want to save your progress as often as possible, as the days out in the wild are long, and the thought of losing your progress isn’t an overhanging burden you’ll want to bear. You can set up a weak shelter by combining palm leaves, rope, logs, and sticks together in your crafting journal.

Of course, you should also take the location of your camping spot into consideration, too. If possible, aim to avoid any enclosed spaces, as this will attract predators during the night and essentially single you out, leaving you open to attack. Ideally, you’ll want to find a location that’s near a stream, as this will let you hunt for food between other duties, and also stock up on water and other supplies when needed. In other words, don’t build a tent in the heart of the lion’s den, if you know what’s good for you.

3. Avoid Nighttime Exploration

There’s a time for exploration — and it isn’t during nightfall. As it turns out, the twilight hours are known for their hunts, which means you’ll want to refrain from stepping out of your comfort zone until fully equipped to do so. Until then, try and keep your nighttime activities to a minimum, and use the hours in the day to prepare for the night ahead. And remember, it isn’t a sprint, but a walk — so try not to look too far into the future when there are more pressing matters to deal with in the present.

On a good day, you’ll wind up catching enough food to keep your energy levels up, and foraging for enough materials to craft something useful to help you progress deeper into the jungle. Having said that, don’t be surprised if it takes a fortnight to make any progress, as each step takes time — as does collecting resources to bulk out your crafting journal. Bottom line is, Green Hell cannot be beaten in a day, so you’d best settle in for the long haul.

2. Coconuts Are Your Friends

There’s no doubt about it — coconuts are the one primary ingredient you’ll be needing to survive Green Hell for the duration of your time in the jungle. Why? Well, to quench your thirst, of course. And not only that, but also provide you with the key nutrients and fats to keep your hunger and energy levels in tip-top condition, too.

In addition to the above perks, coconuts can also be turned into a variety of tools; a bowl for cooking and boiling and filtering dirty water, as well as catching fallen rainwater, for example. So, if you’re planning on stocking up on anything at all, make sure it’s round and hairy. Point is, coconuts will save your life in Green Hell — so do yourself a favor and give each one the Wilson treatment.

1. Stay Warm, Stay Sane

One of the biggest obstacles you’ll have to overcome in Green Hell is your declining sanity levels. Unfortunately, it pretty much comes with the territory, and it can, if not treated properly, lead you into an early grave — and with countless hallucinations to keep you company, no less. So, to prevent this from happening, you’ll want to formulate a routine — an agenda that ideally involves sleeping on a good bed, eating hearty meals, and keeping warm by a makeshift campfire. If you can accomplish each of these three things each day, then you’ll be able to fend off any imposing hallucinogenic symptoms.

While on the subject of keeping warm, you should aim to build a fire just as soon as you’ve crafted your first weapon and campsite. You will, of course, need a roaring fire to cook your meat, as well as distill water and other consumables. To build a fire, simply combine Tinder with a pile of sticks, and then craft a Hand Drill out of two additional sticks to light it.
