Project Survival: Everything We Know

If Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Monster Hunter Rise, and Fortnite had, by some miracle, merged into a standalone product, then we’d like to think it would look a little something like Project Survival, an all-new anime-fantasy survival-crafting game by Magnus Games Studio and SHUEISHA GAMES. Truth be told, it’s hard to picture it as anything else at this point, as it seemingly draws elements from each of the three, and does so surprisingly well, all things considered.

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to see what it is, let alone the outstanding features that will set it apart from its influences for quite some time yet. As there’s no release date set in stone at the time of writing, or even a definite title, for that matter, it’s tough to paint a vivid portrait of it in its current state. That said, here’s everything we’ve been able to extract from it since it first came to light earlier this month. Project Survival: what is it, really, and what can we expect to see come of its deep fantasy roots?

What Is Project Survival?

From what we’ve caught of it so far, Project Survival is a crafting-survival game set in a fantasy open world—a location in which players can take control of their very own hero and forge a legacy off the fat of the land. With hack-and-slash combat highly reminiscent of Hyrule Warriors fused with the fibers of a typical Fortnite-type crafting system, the untitled project will look to bring the best of both worlds to either a single-player experience, or a multiplayer one that caters for up to 25 other players.

”Project Survival is an anime fantasy survival-crafting, monster taming, open world adventure game that you can enjoy solo or with friends,” the description reads in part. “Embark on an epic journey in a thrilling fantasy survival game that will push your skills and instincts to their limits. After the devastating destruction of your original world, you find yourself stranded on an unknown universe teeming with dangerous and awe-inspiring life forms. It’s up to you to adapt, survive, and thrive in this stunning new realm.”

Story

Magnus Games Studio tells us of this stunning new realm, but has yet to flesh out its world with any type of backstory. What we do know, however, is that players will be invited to live in said mythical anime-inspired realm, either alone, or with the support of other like-minded legacy-hunting torchbearers. And according to its rather vague blurb, this world will be in an entirely new frontier—a futuristic domain that’s entirely separate from its “old world.” Did someone say spontaneous cataclysm? It’s in the winds, anyway.

“Forge your destiny in the new realm as you navigate a vast, dangerous, and captivating world,” the blurb adds, rather mysteriously. “Will you rise from the ashes of your old world and thrive in this new frontier, or succumb to the perils that lie ahead? The choice is yours.” Like we said, vague. Intriguing, though.

Gameplay

Judging by the footage that Magnus Games Studio has provided to date, it seems Project Survival will grant its players the opportunity to develop their own gameplay style. As a rich sandbox title with a number of routes, skills, and story arcs to pursue, it’s likely that we’ll also have less of an obligation to follow a particular path, and more freedom to choose which one to follow. A typical crafting-survival game, really.

Aside from the vast open world that’ll be available to explore at will, Project Survival will also make room for plenty of beast taming, home renovation, and hack-and-slash combat. There’ll even be mounts, both land and aerial, as well as a plethora of options to customize your hero and the gear that’ll take you from the ashes of the past to a new and exciting future. Quite the plateful, all things considered.

“Immerse yourself in a visually breathtaking world, filled with lush forests, towering mountains, frozen peaks, and mysterious ruins,” the blurb adds. “Each corner of the realm holds secrets waiting to be uncovered, urging you to embark on daring expeditions to discover its hidden wonders.”

“Survival in this new world comes at a cost,” the blurb continues. “Engage in intense competitions and strategic encounters with other players as you vie for valuable resources spread across the map. Form alliances to dominate resource-rich territories or engage in fierce battles to claim what's rightfully yours. The survival of the fittest is the rule of the land.”

Development

In case you missed it, Magnus Games Studio, the creator behind life simulation hit Re:Legend, brought the untitled IP to audiences earlier this month. Going by the team’s portfolio, Project Survival will serve as its second feature-length game since its inception back in 2017. If all goes according to plan, then we should see the final product hit the shelves in 2024. That is, of course, providing there are no molehills to clamber over in the approach to its launch. Fingers crossed, either way.

Trailer

The good news is, Magnus Games Studio has teased a short trailer outlining a lot of the core gameplay elements over on its Steam page. You can check it out for yourself here.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Project Survival will be heading to PC via Steam. As for when it will latch onto the Steam frontier has yet to be confirmed. If all goes according to plan, then chances are we’ll see it before year’s end. That said, a 2024 release window seems more likely at this moment in time, given the lack of details so late in the current year. But who knows? There’s still a chance yet, and it’s likely that the devs will shed a little more light on the matter over the next several months.

If there are any special editions knocking about, then Magnus Games Studio has managed to do a pretty good job of keeping them stowed away. But then, as it’s still early days and the developer has yet to hammer down a launch date, chances are we’ll be seeing an update on this front a little later down the line.

If you’re interested in keeping tabs on the upcoming IP, then be sure to check in with the team over on its official social feed for all the latest updates here. If we manage to catch wind of the release date, we’ll be sure to post the details right here on gaming.net.
