Nintendo Opts Out of Gamescom 2024 Amidst Anticipation for Next-Gen Console
Nintendo has officially confirmed that it will not attend Gamescom 2024, one of the biggest gaming industry events. Nintendo’s absence is a change from the company that has regularly participated in the prestigious gaming event previously.
Nintendo confirmed the news via a statement to Games Wirtschaft, a German publication. The statement stated that the company will not participate as an exhibitor at this year's Gamescom. According to a spokesperson from Nintendo, the company strategically decided to forgo participation in Gamescon 2024. The company has opted to redirect its focus towards alternative Germany-wide events to showcase Nintendo Switch titles.
“Gamescom is a central event in Nintendo's event calendar,” a Nintendo of Europe spokesperson told German site Games Wirtschaft. “This year, however, after careful consideration, we decided against taking part in Cologne. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch as part of other Germany-wide events,” part of the statement read.
Nintendo's absence at Gamescom 2024 comes amid ongoing speculation regarding the launch of its next-gen console. Earlier this year, reports indicated internal delays pushing the release of the next-gen console to early 2025. The reasons for the delay remain undisclosed. Industry experts believe that Nintendo has difficulty meeting the demands of robust first-party software development. Some have asserted that Nintendo is trying to avoid possible hardware supply issues.
Nintendo has not revealed much details about its next console. With the company's conspicuous absence from the event, all eyes remain on the gaming giant as enthusiasts eagerly wait for news of the impending Switch 2 release and the company's strategic moves leading up to it.
Gamescom organizers are yet to reveal the complete list of exhibitors for the upcoming event. Gamescon 2024 will take place in Cologne, Germany, from August 21-25.
