Awesome Indies Showcase 2022: 5 Upcoming Games You Should Know About

Updated on
Awesome Indies Showcase 2022

So, what did we think of Gamescom 2022's Awesome Indies Showcase? To be honest, we felt it was lackluster and didn't whet our appetite for upcoming indie games. The biggest letdown was the lack of details regarding Hollow Knight: Silk Song, the most anticipated indie game currently in development. Even without that, the Awesome Indies Showcase 2022 didn't offer many surprises. So, if you missed the show, don't have any fear of missing out, because you didn't miss anything over the top exciting.

However, there were some games that piqued our interest and are evidently the upcoming indie games on this list that we believe you should be aware of. After all, the majority of these Indie games are still in the early stages of development, with few even having a release date. That's why it's a little early to swing the critic's hammer. Nevertheless, it's always a good idea to keep an eye on indie games that are showing promising potential.  And, after watching the Awesome Indies Showcase 2022, here are the upcoming games we recommend you keep an eye on.

5. Lightyear Frontier

Lightyear Frontier Official Gameplay Reveal Trailer | gamescom 2022

Lightyear Frontier received a lot of attention at this year's Gamescom 2022. It was most recently the conclusion of the Awesome Indies Showcase 2022, which featured an official gameplay reveal trailer. The entire trailer demonstrated the gameplay behind the farming mech you use to sustain your new home on a distant planet. While it's intriguing, we're hoping we could get out of the vehicle because the slow waddle and driving speed will quickly become tedious.

The game allows you to play with up to three friends, all with the same goal of creating a new sustainable life on an alien planet. If you want to prosper, you'll have to go deeper and deeper into unexplored territory. Which is said to hold ancient secrets, clues, and lost knowledge all over the world. Lightyear Frontier appears to be a peaceful and immersive farming game that should be fun to play with friends. Indie Studio  Frame Break is currently developing the new IP and is slated for a Spring 2023 release.

4. Ghost Song

Ghost Song Reveal Trailer | gamescom 2022

There certainly has been a lot of games set in space in the past years, but as long as they contain some intriguing sci-fi elements, we won't be complaining. And to add to the pile of outer space games, Ghost Song was revealed at the Awesome Indies Showcase 2022. However, the game looks to be a notable entry with lots of sci-fi elements, so you could say it's got us hooked. And if you're a fan of immersive 2D side-scrollers, this should be on your radar too.

Ghost Song is an atmospheric 2D adventure with the potential to be quite immersive. You play as a Deadsuit, who awakens from a deep slumber on the desolate moon of Lorian. Confused but ready for any challenge, you must venture far beyond the moon's surface in search of answers. This will inevitably lead you down into the alien caverns below uncovering more ancient discoveries. The game does not yet have a release date, but it is expected in 2022.

3. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia

The Last Hero Of Nostalgaia - Official Gameplay Trailer | gamescom 2022

In terms of original ideas, The Last Hero of Nostalgaia appears to be bringing something new and refreshing to our screens. And the gameplay trailer shown at the Awesome Indies Showcase only adds to our excitement for this game. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is a thrilling action-adventure game accompanied by a wicked fantasy story set in Nostalgaia, the “world of video games.” In this adventure, Nostalgia is collapsing backward in time to pixelation and is destined for oblivion.

That is, unless, you, a hideously under-detailed stick pixel, have something to say about it. You can also bring a friend along to save the world of video games with online co-op. The game includes soul-like exploration and combat, as well as a cynical narrator who despises your efforts. Overall, the game appears to have a unique narrative and a lighthearted approach to the grim and dark concept of soul-like games. It's all shaping up to be a pretty unique concept, but we're most excited about defeating bosses as nothing more than a characterized stick pixel person sometime in 2022.

2. Fall of Porcupine

Fall of Porcupine is a Hospital Drama Starring a Pigeon | gamescom 2022

No, this is not a game about a porcupine, well, sort of. Fall of Porcupine is a new side-scrolling hospital drama that debuted at the Awesome Indies Showcase 2022. The game is a one-of-a-kind story adventure that aims to reflect the harsh reality of a failing healthcare system. And as a Pigeon Doctor, you get to see, feel, and juggle it all not only at work but also at home. Which is intended to depict the realistic collision of work and home life in a failing healthcare system.

As adorable as the game appears, it is intended to be a realistically sad narrative that addresses some real-life issues.  So prepare to have a strong heart as you play through and experience these realities for yourself. But the fact that they had to make it with animals will most likely make our hearts ache even more. The game is set to release in 2023, but a free prologue is available now to get a sample of its emotional narrative.

1. Lou's Lagoon

Lou's Lagoon Gameplay Trailer | gamescom 2022

Out of all the games shown at the Awesome Indies Showcase 2022, no one looks more well conspired than Lou's Lagoon. The goal of this indie game is to run a seaplane delivery service for an island village. Uncle Lou, who has mysteriously vanished, has left the seaplane delivery service for you to manage. Now you must keep the business afloat while investigating what happened to your uncle.

As you make more deliveries, trades, and missions, you'll be led to discover new islands. But each island has its own set of treasures, mysteries, and even clues about your uncle. Lou's Lagoon appears to be a lighthearted story, but also one that is immersive and adventurous. There is no set release date for the game, but if you enjoy indie adventures, this is one upcoming title to have on your radar.
