Gamescom 2022: 5 Upcoming Games You Should Definitely Play

Gamescom 2022 is here. Another chance to interact with fellow game-heads, trade names, and witness the launch of exciting new games. Before 2019, the video game trade fair was held virtually, but Gamescom is now an in-person and virtual event for the third year running. A significant moment in the convention is the release of exclusive games that have been massively hyped up. Most gamers converging on the event have their hearts set on confirmed titles and world premieres. So ladies and gentlemen, if you're at Gamescom or planning to watch the live action from your screen, here are five upcoming games you should add to your list.

5. Pentiment

Pentiment Announcement Trailer

Endowed with history, Pentiment is a narrative role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Unlike the developer's previous games, such as Fallout: New Vegas, Pentiment takes a new twist on adventure elements in what the developers term a “light RPG.” This means the game does not require advanced gaming skills. Anyone can play it due to its straightforward and deep role-playing mechanics.

The game takes place in medieval times in Bavaria, Germany. Players take the role of Andreas Maler, who takes up the quest to investigate the mysterious murder of a prominent figure. Andreas' friend is wrongly convicted of the crime, and the gamer has to find the right murderer to exonerate his friend. The game spans over 25 years, but it does not reveal who the perpetrator is.

Players can interact with the characters in the fictional town of Tasting while investigating, collecting evidence, and working out clues. The game also allows you to choose Andreas' background and education before the game starts. Your choice will affect how your character conducts his investigation and interactions too. The game is scheduled for release in November 2022.

4. Hogwarts Legacy-Dark Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy - Sebastian Sallow's Dark Legacy | PS5 & PS4 Games

Explore the wizarding world in Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment's Harry Potter-based RPG title. Hogwarts Legacy-Dark Legacy takes a darker approach, unlike the book's storyline. The game allows players to embrace their dark side and take a swing at vile, unforgivable spells.

Gamers play a character starting their fifth year at Hogwarts. The character holds the key to a grave-old secret that can massively change the wizarding world. Just like Harry Potter, you have to safeguard the secret and keep it away from the wrong hands. The fate of the wizarding world inevitably lies in your hands.

Players can customize their character's appearance and choose their preferred house or gender. You can unlock various spells and abilities as you progress through the game. You can also wander through the vast Hogwarts corridors and attend classes such as Herbology, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Fantastic Beasts is not left out in this wizarding adventure. Players can tame magical creatures such as dragons and trolls and use them in combat. You should expect more of this action after its launch on February 10, 2023.

3. Dead Island 2

Another upcoming title you will interact with at Gamescom 2022 is Dead Island 2. The action role-playing game is the third installment in the Dead Island franchise by Deep Silver and is a sequel to Dead Island. Form alliances and wage wars, but don't be caught.

The game is set in the sunny and blood-drenched open world of Los Angeles. Dead Island 2 follows the aftermath of the Banoi events. Survivors of the previous zombie attack are placed in a restricted zone by a stereotypical military organization. Renegades protest the new regime and seek shelter on a nearby island. The island then experiences a new zombie attack, and the renegades must battle it out for survival in the sunny, gore-filled airspace.

Some characters from the prequel are included in the new title and a significant upgrade to its game mechanics. Players can craft their weapons while unleashing rage combat on the living dead. Expect to watch two new trailers at Gamescom and gear up for the release on February 3, 2023.

2. Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers - Announce Trailer

The upcoming first open-world game series developed by Sonic Team will also feature at Gamescom 2022. The 3D action-adventure platform game follows Sonic, who separates from his friends after they get sucked into a wormhole. Players take on Sonic's role as he traverses through the mysterious land.

Players must collect chaos emeralds and clues that will help Sonic reunite with his friends. The game's mechanics are fixated on Sonic's abilities. Players can run at high speeds, scale skyscrapers, and perform double jumps. The game also allows you to customize Sonic's movement, such as acceleration, turning, resistance, and ring capacity.

The action does not stop there. Sonic will also battle robots on his path. Players can use the Cycloop to make enemies an easier target to hit while also parrying and dodging attacks. The open-world environment gives you vast freedom to play around with Sonic's supernatural abilities. Sonic Frontiers is scheduled for release on November 8, 2022.

1. Grounded

Finally, a title you don't want to miss at Gamescom is Grounded. Another entry by Obsidian Entertainment shrinks characters to ant-size and lets you explore the world from a miniature point of view. The survival video game takes on a new twist where instead of fighting oversized and gory perils in different worlds, you have to survive the unforgiving terrain of your backyard.

Players choose a character from the roost of shrunken-down teens and embark on a journey to find a habitable home. You can collect items such as rocks, twigs, and even bugs to build your new mini sanctuary. You will also need to replenish your health by consuming water and food, or your character may die of dehydration or starvation.

The game is laden with different insects, each having different functions in the game. Spiders are your worst enemies since they will prey on your miniature-sized character. Ladybugs are more friendly, and they will guide you to food sources. If you have a fear of bugs, the game allows you to modify the petrifying nature of the insects for a less frightening experience. Obsidian announced the full release of the game to take place on September 27,2022.
