We Kill Monsters: Everything We Know

Glass Revolver has announced We Kill Monsters, an all-new Strand-type action-adventure game set around the falling of Angels, and the homunculi who hunt them. Think Monster Hunter World meshed with Death Stranding, and you’ll have an idea of what it’s getting at — a perilous journey with all the core ingredients to formulate an authentically grueling experience. There’ll be death-defying feats to overcome, and a whole roster of Angels to sift through on a quest to reach one location, in particular: the bottom of an energy-starved pit known as The Shell.

It goes without saying that there’s a lot to unpack here, more so in its lore department—a section that’s anything but short on specifics. But for what it’s worth, Glass Revolver has indeed made an effort to enlighten us on some of the game’s primary elements. Curious to hear more? Here’s everything we can tell you about it.

What Is We Kill Monsters?

We Kill Monsters is an upcoming third-person survival adventure game by Glass Revolver. Its theme, much like its Strand-like counterpart, revolves around a barren wasteland known as the Dying City of Edinu—a world in which fallen Angels pluck the bones of a lost civilization from the depths of a pit known as The Shell. It is within the bloodstream of these forsaken Angels that an all-powerful energy resides—a power that’s needed to activate The Great Elevator. And it’s even deeper there, in the uncharted waters of The Shell, that a rare resource known as Primordial Fluid can be found. Guess who’s in charge of finding said Fluid? It isn’t one of the Angels, that’s for sure.

WE KILL MONSTERS is an adventure game for up to four players,” Glass Revolver adds. “Players descend into a mysterious, massive, interconnected pit with their only known goal being to reach its bottom. Its goal is to simulate the feeling of a long and arduous journey.” Like Death Stranding, then, but with less supernatural residue and more brutish villains and what have you. Color us intrigued.

Story

As a reminder, We Kill Monsters is set in the Dying City of Edinu, or the depths below that are only traversable via The Great Elevator, at least. According to the blurb, the last hope for the city is through the extraction of Primordial Fluid. However, there’s a catch: The Shell has been scraped of all its available juice, which means another species will have to venture even deeper in search of it. And that’s where you come in — the homunculus birthed entirely for the purpose of exploring The Shell.

“With most of the accessible fluid within the first several layers being extracted, homunculi must travel deeper using The Great Elevator,” the blurb elaborates. “This elevator of unknown origin stretches to an undetermined depth and can only be powered through an immense output of energy, such as the death of an Angel.” Energy. Angels. You get the picture, right? It’s a case of mining deeper to extract a resource that just so happens to be blocked by a firewall of fallen Angels. It’s a darn good thing you’re a Husk of Edinu, then.

Gameplay

From the looks of the footage, We Kill Monsters will be a survival game at heart, with combat being much more of an afterthought than anything. To this end, players can expect to embark on lengthy journeys through The Shell as one of the ever-brave homunculi known as Husks of Edinu.

“Each layer of The Shell is expansive and open,” the description explains. “This allows homunculi to navigate freely using large structures and various navigation tools. While hunting Angels, you’ll need to explore for items, food, weapons, clothing, and equipment in order to survive.” So again, it’s a survival game, straight up.

Scavenging aside, players will also need to keep track of the cargo they’re carrying and the tools they have in their possession. As the hikes will be drawn-out and perilous, you’ll need to shift between key items to get the job done. Fortunately for you and your squad, such daring exploits will provide the occasional respite.

“The journey is long and it’s important to rest,” the blurb continues. “Set up camp anywhere at any time in order to cook, sleep, trade items, sit around the fire, or play a bit of guitar with friends.” Bottom line is, We Kill Monsters won’t be about the destination, but the journey itself. How wholesome.

Development

Glass Revolver first teased its latest game back in 2022, at which point it showcased some early development footage via its streaming handle. Since then, the IP has popped up at Annapurna Interactive’s annual showcase, which recently took place at the end of last month. Other than that, though, We Kill Monsters has mostly kept itself to itself, which begs the question: when will it finally release? And the answer to that, really, is that we don’t actually know.

It is worth pointing out that Glass Revolver is made up of just the one main developer — Jacob Williams. Knowing that, and how ambitious the actual game is, leads us to believe that we could still be a ways off from seeing it jolt to life. Who knows? With a little luck, we could see it before year’s end. Don’t quote us on that, though.

We Kill Monsters - Teaser Trailer

Although without a release window in mind, We Kill Monsters does at least have a trailer. You can check it out for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

We Kill Monsters will be heading to PC via Steam. A release date has yet to be announced, as have the studio’s plans to bring the game to any consoles. Does this mean it won’t be coming to the likes of Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch? At the moment, no. At least, there hasn’t been anything to convince us otherwise.

As we’re still tiptoeing around the starting line, it makes sense that Glass Revolver hasn’t shed light on any special editions. If anything of the sort does come to fruition, then news is likely to spread closer to its launch. Q1 2024, if we’re lucky.
