Super Crazy Rhythm Castle: Everything We Know

Konami has lifted the veil on an all-new rhythmic action game titled Super Crazy Rhythm Castle. And boy, is it weird. It’s so unusual, in fact, that I can’t for the life of me make heads or tails of what it’s all about, other than the fact that there’ll be a block of cheese, a giraffe, and an eggplant sewn into it somehow. As for what any of this has to do with the art of beat-mashing and chord-stomping is beyond me. But, like you, I too feel the urge to peel back a few additional layers and decipher what it is that echoes from below. Thanks for that, Konami. Well played.

So what is it, exactly, and how does it compare to the likes of other universally acclaimed rhythm IPs? Well, here’s everything we’ve been able to collect on the matter since first hearing of its existence a little while back. Super Crazy Rhythm Castle: what, when, and most importantly, why? Cue the beat.

What Is Super Crazy Rhythm Castle?

Oh boy, here we go. Super Crazy Rhythm Castle, in case you haven’t put two and two together yet, is an action-packed rhythm game that blends classic platforming elements with team-based rhythmic routines. Think It Takes Two, but with up to four players (and not to mention a whole lot of cooky biomes that are highly reminiscent of, say, Psychonauts) — and you’ll have a rough idea of what it’s aiming to accomplish. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, then I can’t say I know what will at this point.

Let it be said that there’s still plenty we don’t actually know about the upcoming game, other than its overall world and some of the otherworldly characters that will inhabit it. For what it’s worth, though, here’s everything we’ve been able to pick up from its blurb and the early previews that both Konami and developer Second Impact Games have provided since removing the veil. Specifically, the story that it’ll look to depict.

Story

Surprise surprise, Super Crazy Rhythm Castle will take place within the confines of the ever-expanding Rhythm Castle—a colourful world that’s rife with endless wonders and musical secrets. It is here, right in the heart of the castle, that you and three other friends will work your way through the floors and tackle the beat-infused obstacles that the tyrannical ruler known as King Ferdinand has laid out for you.

“An unforgettable journey with a light heart and a tapping foot,” the press release expands. “You’ll become one with the music and the madness. Unlikely heroes, approach Rhythm Castle! Inside, the unhinged King Ferdinand awaits, ready to defend his crown and ruin your day. Overcome his twisted challenges and beat him in his own game.” That’s as clear as they could’ve made it, apparently.

So, what exactly is this game that the so-called King Ferdinand will be playing, and how will you be aiming to one-up him as a dynamic quartet? Well, that’s just the thing — we don’t actually know. And I’m also fairly certain that not even the devs know at this point in time, either. All the more reason to keep it on our radars, I suppose.

Gameplay

According to the team behind it, Super Crazy Rhythm Castle will bring “chaotic cooperative gameplay that’s fun and accessible” for up to four players. And while it does promise to bring a single-player experience to accompany the multiplayer blueprint, it appears the beating heart will revolve entirely around the team-based shenanigans that each unique biome will serve up.

“Not a pro at rhythm games?” the blurb continues. “Each player can play their music in three-button or four-button mode – or hop out to focus on puzzling while your buddy covers the music! Whether you go solo or sync up with friends, get ready to embrace the madness and take on the challenges of Rhythm Castle.” Exciting stuff.

It isn’t exactly Metal: Hellsinger, but it is a rhythm game with a fairly wide selection of genres, at least. And when we say genres, we’re talking “earworm rock, hip hop, dubstep, and plenty more.” As for what on earth earworm rock is is still anybody’s guess. It’s bound to be riddled with angst, either way.

Development

Of course, this isn’t actually the first rhythm game in the Super Crazy series. Lest we forget that the upcoming entry will also be the follow-up chapter to Super Crazy Guitar Maniac, a flash sensation that went on to become one of the most impressionable rhythm games of its kind. The difference between that and the latest journey is the fact that, well, the latter is a little more, shall we say, modern? Onwards and upwards for Second Impact Games, it seems.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

The good news is, Super Crazy Rhythm Castle will be shaping up for a release on all major platforms. The bad news is, Konami has yet to clarify when that launch date is expected to roll out. From what we’ve heard, though, it seems an early 2024 is the most likely time for it to come to fruition. But don’t quote us on that, though.
