Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

The Summer Game Fest event kicked off to a great start with Ubisoft treating fans to the teaser trailer for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (sorry, no updates on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, yet). The reveal trailer set the tone nicely for what’s to come, with the studio officially confirming a release date. Obviously, there are still a few items in the wind. But, fortunately, you can still catch more updates on the game at the Ubisoft Forward event on June 12, 2023.

The Prince of Persia had undergone quite a long hiatus of 13 years since its last release. So, now that a new game is in the works, with an official release date already confirmed, it’s certainly a nice surprise that fans can start to look forward to. Curious to know the story, gameplay, release date, and more? We’ve detailed the answers to your questions in today’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown – Everything We Know article below.

What is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown?

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an upcoming action-adventure platformer. It’s going to be a 2D side-scroller set in the mythological Persian world. The game will launch on January 18th, 2024, on all current-gen and next-gen platforms.

Story

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown plans to tell an engaging, original story. At the center of the narrative is Sargon, a young warrior of the Immortals group. Sargon (you), will need to buckle up for a grueling mission of rescuing Prince Ghassan from the cursed Mount Oaf. According to Ubisoft, the narrative is based on Persian mythology, with the studio taking the concept further to curate the story in a mythological Persian fantasy world. Here, you can freely manipulate time and space as you run into the mythological creatures of Mount Oaf and unravel the mysteries within.

Gameplay

There are several cogs that work together to run the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown machine. Firstly, the concept of time is different. You can manipulate time however you please using your Time Powers. Unfortunately, there are mythological creatures that have been corrupted by time itself. And, it’s up to you to defeat them and restore order. There are powerful Amulets you can obtain from shopkeepers to use in battle. You can also use special powers to boost your combat and platforming skills.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a platforming game. So, traversal across the game’s cursed Persian world will likely involve popular platforming moves like jumping and running. You’re free to explore around, too, with several larger-than-life landmarks to discover. Ubisoft claims to infuse this world with detailed biomes, from which you’ll discover wonders and dangers across the board.

Meanwhile, there will be puzzles that require clever thinking to solve. Your playthrough will take the form of quests. These can involve all sorts of wild objectives, like finding hidden treasures and so on. Mount Oaf is crawling with tons of mysteries, which will no doubt turn into a wild, epic adventure to unravel.

Development

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

It’s been 13 years since the last Prince of Persia game was released. The franchise made its debut in 1989, followed by sequels, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and The Flame in 1993, and Prince of Persia 3D in 1999. Since Prince of Persia: Harem Adventures was released in 2003, the franchise has been relatively consistent, until the final Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands in 2010.

It’s definitely a surprise for the series to reincarnate 13 years later. Contrary to what you would expect, the reception hasn’t been the best. Ubisoft has received mixed positive and negative reviews on the reveal trailer thus far. The negative ones owe largely to Ubisoft's keeping silent on the progress of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. The remake was only recently announced to be in development, and fans expected to see it first before a new game. It’s wild because the remake didn’t have an overly positive reception, either.

Despite all the commotion, Ubisoft remains welcoming to all responses. They have chosen to welcome all reviews positively, as stated in their tweet response here. It’s certainly a relief to see the studio hold firm and steady, promising to answer all the questions and concerns in the coming days and weeks. Hopefully, we'll be privy to new information at the Ubisoft Forward event on June 12th, 2023. But, generally, the studio’s confidence is definitely reassuring that they could be working on something truly great; all we need to do is hope for the best.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown - Reveal Gameplay Trailer

In the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown reveal trailer, the graphics, and gameplay look fantastic, certainly affirming Ubisoft’s claim on their website that the new game will feature “…high quality graphics, immersive cinematics and fresh Artistic Direction, along with a unique gameplay fluidity…” The trailer is also a great place to become familiar with what to expect on the gameplay front. You can see traversal mechanics like wall-running come to play. Plus, a huge potential for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to revolutionize sword-slashing for the franchise. Hopefully, once the game comes out, the studio’s sentiment will remain true to form.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

It’s official. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will release on January 18th, 2024, hopefully without any delays. For now, we know that the game will launch on all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
