Path of Exile is a game that has garnered much attention and praise for its stellar ARPG gameplay. This game takes the minute details of creating a great ARPG and manages to refine it wonderfully. The game itself has an almost infinite amount of replayability. And there are systems that keep players returning to the game, whether it is to receive more loot or simply to spend more time within the game's world. That said, the game's sequel is on the horizon and there remain a ton of questions surrounding the game. These questions range in their intention as well as in the topics they cover. What is Path of Exile II?

Well, to begin with, a primary question that needs to be answered is, What is Path of Exile II? Well, for those who don't know, the game is a sequel to the massively successful ARPG Path of Exile. Areas in which these games show off their expertise are itemization, as well as dungeon design, and other ARPG mechanics. This essentially makes it a great game with a lot of potential to live up to. This can be seen in the outpouring of praise for its predecessor, however, with Path of Exile II it seems we can expect something bolder and bigger.

If the recently showcased trailer at Summer Games Fest 2023, is any indication, fans are in for quite a treat. From what can be seen it appears that the spell effects for the game have received great improvement. Also, there is more environmental detail in the game's dungeons. This is great, as it will surely allow the developers to explore their dungeon design deeper, and allow for more creative options. Additionally, it would appear that the game is retaining its free-to-play model, which is great for players who want to get into the game.

Story

As far as the story of Path of Exile 2 goes, it will very much be a continuation of Path of Exile's story. Seeing as Path of Exile 2 will allow older Path of Exile data to cross over. The story will definitely continue heavily emphasizing the dark tones it has excelled in showcasing which is great. So for players who enjoyed the Path of Exile story, then Path of Exile 2 will be continuing on in that same vein. So in short, players who have come to love and appreciate the dedication that has been shown throughout the Path of Exile story will be receiving the same quality in a higher quantity.

Gameplay

In terms of ARPG gameplay, Path of Exile II appears phenomenal. There are so many intricate details poured into the game that makes its world feel more well-realized and alive. These include things such as lighting overhauls which serve to bring a better sense of contrast and lived-in space to the game. This is great and serves to only improve the player's immersion within the game. From a combat standpoint, the game's combat animations appear greatly improved. This is no doubt due to an increase in the budget due to the success of Path of Exile.

The fidelity with which the combat animations play out is also impressive. Because they strike a balance and they are buttery smooth and visceral at the same time. This is sure to go a long way toward aiding players in getting a feel for the combat. As most of the game will see players running through dungeons after loot, it is important that the gameplay which makes up this game's loop is very impressive. And so far, from what has been shown the developers are certainly going in the right direction.

Additionally, it would appear that both melee and magic classes each have wonderful animation improvements. Each of these goes a long way to accompany their individual play styles. Giving the player a sense of power within the game's world is really important. And from the looks of it, the developers absolutely nailed that aspect of gameplay.

Development

The development of Path of Exile II has been something that has been highly followed by its community. It would appear that the developers wish to reveal more information at the upcoming ExileCon. For those unaware, this is a convention centered around all things Path of Exile.  It is scheduled for the 29th through the 30th of July 2023. There are sure to be more developmental updates revealed at this event, and we are certainly excited to learn more about the game.

One aspect that the development of Path of Exile 2 wishes to address is the new player experience. Certain game mechanics will be simplified in order to make the onboarding process easier. This is great, as it will allow more people into the game itself. So in conclusion, the development of Path of Exile 2 appears to be on track for a late 2023 to early 2024 release.

Trailer

Now comes the time to discuss the trailer for Path of Exile 2. This trailer was showcased at Summer Games Fest 2023 and shows quite a few things that players have found impressive. For starters, the gameplay animations have all seen great improvement, which is good for the visual identity of the game. Additionally, we are able to see how these powers affect the environment around the player as well. This is great, and really gives the player a sense of power, and affecting the environment is a great way to showcase this.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

As far as a release date goes, there isn't a ton of information to lead us in any one direction. From what can be gathered the game is shooting for a late 2023 or early 2024 release at the earliest. This will give the game time to develop and ensure that all aspects of the game work as intended, which is great. In the meantime, players can enjoy Path of Exile for what it is before Path of Exile 2 comes. As far as platforms go, it would appear that Path of Exile 2 will be available on all devices that Path of Exile is available on. These devices include the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
