Neo Berlin 2087: Everything We Know

If, by some miracle, Crysis, Deus Ex, and Killzone was to give birth to a successor and label it Neo Berlin 2087, then we'd be all for the prospect of seeing it come to fruition, no questions asked. But as it turns out, neither of the two have any involvement in the upcoming cyberpunk opera whatsoever. Instead, it's being developed by Elysium Game Studio, a relatively new firm based over in Germany. And from what the team has provided so far, it seems the Unreal Engine 5 project is in receipt of some double-edged feedback — no thanks to its hit-and-miss trailer that, despite having top-tier next-gen visuals, lacks a few spare frames to make up the entire portrait.

Of course, it's early days yet, so there are still plenty of creases that need ironing over. However, for the sake of feeding you the scoop, here's everything you need to know about Elysium Game Studio's supposed Killzone killer. Neo Berlin: what, when, and above all, why?

What Is Neo Berlin 2087?

Neo Berlin 2087 is an upcoming cyberpunk-themed first and third-person action-adventure game by Elysium Game Studio. The venture, which takes place within the confines of a futuristic Berlin—a bustling metropolis where technology thrives and only the richest folk reap its perks, will cast you as a detective, one who's purpose is to delve into “heart-wrenching moral dilemmas and immersive investigations.”

Going by the blurb, the technical wizardry of tomorrow will only be accessible to those within the newly erected walls that surround Berlin. The outskirts of the city, however, will tell another story—one that bleeds of poverty and undying tribulations. Between the two social classes, you will sit on the fence and play your part accordingly, be it for the good of the people, or for the city of Berlin and its technological advancements.

Story

So, what's the story here, and how will you tie in with it all? Well, that's just it — we don't actually know. That said, it appears you'll be playing as a justice-seeking detective, working on a series of cases that involve a mixture of social classes and biomes, both within the lavish districts of Berlin, and on the outskirts, a place that houses the latter half of the city's most unfortunate residents.

In Elysium Game Studio's words: “Technological advancements and cyberization have divided society into a two class system, where the rich are ruling over the city while the poor are fighting for survival inside the slums and in the deadly wasteland outside the new Berlin city walls. Dive into an emotional cyberpunk journey about justice, friendship, love, guilt, sacrifice and betrayal.”

Gameplay

From what we've caught of the game so far, players will immerse in an action-packed open world setting—one that involves engaging in high-octane ranged combat, and a series of mysteries that require the use of advanced cyberwares to solve. To this end, avid puzzle solvers will need to utilize every tool in their arsenal in order to see what others simply fail to comprehend.

“As a detective, you can uncover the truth in ways others cannot” the description elaborates. “You have a unique ability to understand human behavior and find clues to solve cases. You can extract valuable information by hacking into the minds of suspects. Every emotion, thought, and memory provides a piece of the puzzle to bring justice and expose hidden secrets. Despite the challenges of navigating complex social and political landscapes, your commitment to justice never wavers. Are you ready to take on the challenge of being an investigator and bring justice to those who need it most in the city?”

Development

Elysium Game Studio, a firm that booted up back in 2019 under the wing of Ivan Mirkovikj, announced its plans to bring Neo Berlin 2087 to consoles and PC in April 2023. Its vision, which is “to create games with narrative-driven, emotional storytelling and graphics on par with AA or even AAA productions,” will see the cyberpunk venture make its way to the market at some point in 2024. It hasn't been said whether or not it'll be heading to Xbox Series X, though the site claims to be working on games that accomodate both next-gen consoles and PC.

“Thanks to funds by the german government’s BMVI, BMWK & DLR as part of a program to strengthen the german games market, as well as funds by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, it was possible to create this project,” the site reads.

Caught your eye? If so, you're in luck, as a trailer for the game was posted earlier this week. And while it doesn't quite set the benchmark for frames per second, it does shed light on the game's monochrome and cyberpunk-infused setting. Need we say more? You can see it for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Neo Berlin 2087 will be coming to PlayStation 5 and PC at some point in 2024. A rather vague release window, for sure, but one that makes sense, given the fact it only came to light earlier this week.

As PlayStation was the first to share news about the game via an announcement trailer, we can't say whether or not it'll be heading to Xbox just yet. Having said that, the developer's site does mention its intention to bring “next-gen games to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.” And with Neo Berlin 2087 being its debut project, this does bode well for Xbox fans.
