What is My Time At Portia?

Today, we begin by breaking down the first game in the My Time series. My Time At Portia served as developer Pathea Game's first outing in this particular series. The game itself allows for players to become crafters and farmers in service to the town of Portia. The game has a distinct art style that is unmistakable for a My Time game. Along the way, they will engage with a number of lively NPCs and have a myriad of tasks to complete for them. This engages the player within the game's core gameplay loop rather effectively as they move throughout the game, learning more about the world around them. There is a heavy emphasis on crafting and the gathering of resources as well. This includes things such as mining and exploration elements to the game which only adds to the gameplay variety within this title.

What Is My Time At Sandrock?

Now it is time to speak of My Time At Portia‘s sequel. My Time At Sandrock is a life/crafting sim much like its predecessor. Players are thrust into the role of a Builder. And must assist the people of Sandrock in a number of tasks and day-to-day activities. A key factor that makes interacting with the NPCs within this title so engaging is the increased variety in the NPC storylines. This means that the more people you interact with within the game, the more enjoyment you will get out of your time at Sandrock. In addition, there are quite a few improvements made to this title that were not present in the first game. This gives the game itself a more overall polished feel. These include things such as an overhauled and improved combat system, a more fleshed-out open world, and much more.

What Are The Main Differences Between My Time At Portia and My Time At Sandrock?

Now that we have introduced both games, it is within this next section that we will start to dissect both games. Doing so will allow us to really understand both of these titles in a more meticulous and objective way. To begin doing so, we start with what is quite possibly the most noticeable difference between these two titles. My Time At Sandrock, when compared graphically to its predecessor, far exceeds the prior game in the series. Environmental design has been vastly expanded on and improved, as well as many different open-world elements that make the game feel just that bit more alive. This is an important factor to consider when talking about My Time At Portia vs. My Time At Sandrock.

Combat

Additionally, My Time At Sandrock does a fantastic job of implementing a new combat system. This goes a long way in aiding the moment-to-moment gameplay within the game. And while My Time At Portia had combat, that was certainly serviceable. Its sequel improves upon it by leaps and bounds. Simply observing the two games, you can tell that the core foundation is present for the series within My Time At Portia. However, there are many elements that might not have been as fleshed out as the developers would have hoped. There are also improvements that have been made to the narrative within these games as well. For example, in My Time At Portia, the main story quests seemed to focus a lot on the building aspect, where My Time At Sandrock has a bit more narrative depth in comparison.

Overall Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, My Time At Sandrock manages to be leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor. Gone are little annoyances such as having to hold each individual part to construct something at the Assembly Station. This makes the whole process of creating new constructs much more pleasing and streamlined. Another addition, such as the ability to upgrade your inventory with gols is also fantastic. This makes it so that players are able to expand their inventory in a way that doesn't feel clunky or convoluted. Finally, the sleep system has also been done away with in favor of a more streamlined save feature accessible through the game's menu. Simply stated, My Time At Sandrock is a far more polished and streamlined experience than My Time At Portia.

My Time At Portia vs. My Time At Sandrock

While the first game in the My Time series definitely has its charm. The overall improved experience, through the game's mechanics and other elements, makes My Time At Sandrock a more polished and complete experience. That said, My Time At Sandrock is still in Early Access. So there is quite a bit of time to add and tweak things in the game. This includes things like fleshing out the game's multiplayer mode, which is currently in development. And while the experience on offer may be objectively better, sometimes players are able to find their own subjective likes and dislikes about a game, even if it isn't as technically impressive. So there is plenty to love about both games.

It would be fair to say that each title brings its own charm to its inhabitants and its world overall. And while My Time At Sandrock may have improved open-world mechanics. This doesn't mean that Portia's world isn't just as cozy. Simply put, you can't really go wrong with either one of these titles. But if you are looking for a more involved and in-depth experience, then we would suggest My Time At Sandrock. So while it certainly isn't a competition, pitting My Time At Portia vs. My Time At Sandrock only serves to highlight what is special about both titles.
