5 Best Games That Let You Get Married

Updated on

Sometimes you just want more in your game than slaying enemies or planning out a city. Maybe you even want to take a trip into the land of romance and get married. There are plenty of games that have romance threaded into their stories, such as The Witcher 3. Most games don't let you choose who to marry, though, or if they do, it's severely limited. If you are looking to experience your own romance, then you should look towards the simulation genre. These games typically provide you with the ability to date and eventually marry the partner of your choosing. Of course, even if you aren't into sims, there is still a great marriage option out there for you in the form of a famous MMORPG.

5. The Sims

The most obvious game that you can get married in is The Sims. This game is basically a doll house, where you make and control the world around your characters. There are dozens of ways to initiate romance into the game. In fact, a gender and sexual orientation update was recently put in place for even more realism. No matter who you are, you can now enjoy toying with the lives of your Sims. You can make yourself, or your best friend, the fate of their life in the game is entirely up to you.

On top of marriage, you have control over other aspects of their lives like careers. You can also dictate if children enter the picture and what type of home you live in. When we say literally everything about these virtual dolls' lives is up to you, we mean it. You can even turn them into creatures of the night, such as vampires or werewolves. There is even a Star Wars pack available that lets you live out even wilder scenarios.

4. Final Fantasy 14

Getting married in Final Fantasy XIV.

If you aren't into sim games, and want to do something cute for your partner, then play Final Fantasy 14. You are able to marry one other character in the game using the Eternal Bonding ceremony. To do so, you even have to go and register your own wedding date and time. You also have to give a special band to the person you want to marry it. Fulfilling these to goals sets you on the path toward being married. You are even able to give out wedding invitations to have other players participate in your special day.

If you want to make your ceremony extra special, then there are paid options. You can upgrade your package to get a special mount, special wedding custimization options, and a wedding gift for those who attend. The ceremony can be as simple and cheap as you want. Many players will even go the roleplaying route afterward and put together a special reception. Best of all, when you are done with the wedding, you will be able to teleport directly to your sweetheart.

3. Story of Seasons

The original sim series that helped pioneer modern-day marriage in games is Story of Seasons. This series was once branded as Harvest Moon in English but has since changed to match its Japanese name. The game, like many sims, revolves around you going to a new town to take over a family farm. Once there, you start to adventure around town and meet the residents. If you wish to become closer to them, you can speak with them each day and give them gifts. Over time their friendship level will increase, and you will get to see heart events.

Once you have seen all of your partner's heart events and have filled their friendship meter, you can propose marriage. Generally, in these games, you will also need to have a big enough house and bed to support your partner. After you are married, there will be additional requirements that you can meet in order to have a child or two. The newest game, Pioneers of Olive Town, even introduced same-sex marriage.

2. Rune Factory

Trying to get married in Story of Seasons.

If you are looking to get married, but want a good balance of story, then Rune Factory is perfect. This is the sister series to Story of Seasons and shares the romance, as well as some of the farming mechanics. The biggest difference is that Rune Factory is much more of an RPG with a focus on combat and storytelling. The game also has you learning to tame monsters to help out on your farm and fulfilling requests. Along the way, though, you get to know the townsfolk and can woo the marriage candidate of your dreams.

It should be noted that marriage isn't an option that you will have early on. In fact, the newest title in the series, Rune Factory 5, requires you to beat the main story before being able to propose. A few of the game's dateable characters can't even be met until you progress through the story. This makes Rune Factory a great choice for someone who wants marriage but also wants an action-packed RPG adventure to go along with it.

1. Stardew Valley

It's very unlikely that you have never heard mention of the game Stardew Valley. It is by far the most advanced farming sim on the market as it delves deep into lore and gameplay mechanics. In fact, you will quickly learn that the marriage candidates in-game even have their own stories. Furthermore, you can date all of them, get married, and if you decide to go with someone else, arrange a divorce. Like in other games, you raise their friendship meter with gifts and by talking with them daily.

Once the meter is filled, you can propose to them with Blue Shell, and you will be married shortly after. You can have kids as well, but to be married and have children, you will need to expand your home.
