Twitch Returns to the Xbox Dashboard After Five Years

Updated on

Twitch has officially returned to the Xbox Dashboard, meaning players can once again stream content by simply tapping a few buttons and connecting to an account.

Prior to its return, Microsoft fought tooth and nail to evolve its own brand streaming platform, Mixer. However, despite signing top-shelf gamers, mainly Ninja, the platform eventually shut down in 2020 after just four years on the block. Its user base, sadly, gravitated toward Facebook Gaming, where it eventually planted roots and left Mixer to trickle in its failure.

Of course, Twitch has been an option for streamers for years now, though it hasn't been within spitting distance since 2017. The app itself has given players the tools to stream, but as far as its place on the Xbox goes — nothing had been done since its departure five years back.

“An uphill battle”

Despite the high praise and optimism, Mixer never really kicked off the way Xbox wanted it to. Xbox boss Phil Spencer even said that it was an “uphill battle from the beginning”, meaning the platform never really had a leg to stand on. Fortunately for us, Twitch was there to reclaim what was rightfully theirs all along. It just took half a decade for Xbox to realize it.

From today, you can navigate over to the Capture & share tab in your Xbox Dashboard, and then simply select Live streaming. After connecting your account, you will be able to stream content to your Twitch audience direct from the console. This works for both Xbox One users as well as Xbox Series X/S users.

So, what's your take? Are you happy to see Twitch back on the Xbox Dashboard? What did you make of Mixer? Let us know over on our socials here or down in the comments below.
