Norse mythology is a fascinating world of ancient gods, giants, and monsters. With its rich stories and memorable characters like Odin and Thor, it's no wonder gaming developers love to use it as a backdrop for their games. The epic quests, moral dilemmas, and battles between good and evil provide endless inspiration for immersive games. The latest title to adopt this lore is the upcoming game Thorgal. The game will pit players against human and god-like adversaries in an immersive experience. So, if Norse mythology checks your boxes, this is one game you should look forward to. Stick with us as we reveal the upcoming features in Thorgal: Everything We Know.

What is Thorgal?

Thorgal

Thorgal is an upcoming adventure action game by Might Koi Studios. The game will feature RPG elements inspired by the popular Polish comic series of the same name, created by Grzegorz Rosiński and Jean Van Hamme. The comic series, which made its debut in 1977, blends Norse mythology, science fiction, horror, and the legend of Atlantis.

Notably, the upcoming title is not the first video game adaptation. In 2022, Cryo Interactive Entertainment released Thorgal: Curse of Atlantis, a point-and-click adventure game bearing the same premise. Despite being short, the game received favorable reviews, praising its solid gameplay and immersive narrative. The game sold over 20 million units and is available in 18 different languages.

Story

ICY ROCKS

As alluded to, the game will immerse players in a classic Norse mythology narrative. Although the devs do not reveal much about its storyline, it does hint that it is a common tale. Experience a timeless tale cherished by fans, offering a modern and immersive adaptation that will enrapture both newcomers and devoted enthusiasts alike.

Players will be cast as the brave Viking Warrior, Thorgal Aegirsson, who takes on divine and mortal enemies. Here is the game's narrative description from the horse's mouth:

Assume the mantle of Thorgal Aegirsson, the enigmatic Viking warrior whose mysterious origins set the stage for an epic odyssey fraught with peril and intrigue. With enemies both mortal and divine lurking at every turn, including formidable adversaries drawn from the rich tapestry of Norse mythology, the fate of Thorgal and his family hangs in the balance.

Gameplay

Thorgal promises to be an action-adventure game that will enthrall RPG enthusiasts with its captivating blend of role-playing elements. While the developers have kept details about its gameplay under wraps, the title will captivate existing fans and beckon newcomers. Players can expect to “embark on an unforgettable adventure where legends are forged, destinies are tested, and the legacy of Thorgal awaits to be written anew.”

From the game’s still captures, players will traverse the unforgiving Nordic landscape. The terrain boasts rugged mountains, dense forests, and expansive coastlines. Plus, the Arctic tundra unfolds in a stark yet breathtaking panorama of icy plains and snow-capped peaks. Ideally the game will feature a stunning backdrop for the game's unfolding drama.

Moreover, combat is expected to unfold as intense melee action. One still depicts the protagonist armed with a bow, arrows, and a blade strapped to his back. Additionally, a female protagonist is showcased in another still. However, it remains unclear whether the game will offer character customization options, allowing players to freely choose their gender.

Development

Forest

Thorgal is a masterful creation by Might Koi Studios, promising an immersive gaming experience rich in Norse mythology. But their ambition doesn't stop there: the Polish studio is also hard at work on another intriguing project titled The Night Wanderer. Drawing inspiration from the book series ‘The Lord of the Ice Garden,' this upcoming title will follow in Thorgal's footsteps. The game will immerse players in a world of Norse mythology where they take on the role of Vuko, the titular protagonist from the books.

Despite being a new player in the industry, Mighty Koi Studios boasts a team of industry veterans with impressive resumes. The studio, founded just two years ago, counts former Wargaming talents Sergey Dovgan and Kiryl Drazdowich among its ranks, along with Cedric Danneels, previously of Bandai Namco and FromSoftware, as well as Rafał Gosieniecki, who has worked with Square Enix. Maciej Zawitaj, formerly of Ubisoft, rounds up the team, bringing a wealth of experience to the table.

Additionally, Thorgal marks the debut title for Mighty Koi Studios, aligning perfectly with their mission to create complex games with compelling characters and stories. And to ensure the success of their upcoming projects, the studio is partnering with Egmont and MediaToon in the marketing and promotion of Thorgal. With Mighty Koi Studios at the helm, the future looks bright for Thorgal and The Night Wanderer alike.

Thorgal: Official Announcement Trailer

Might Koi Studios has unveiled an announcement trailer for its upcoming title. The 58-second trailer doesn't reveal much about the gameplay. However it gives a glimpse of the terrain players will traverse. We also get a glimpse of the protagonist, who bears a striking similarity to the lead character in the comic book series.

Release Date, Platform & Editions

Thorgal

Thorgal doesn't have a release window yet. All we have communicating its release date is the devs posting ‘When It's Ready' on its website. This could signal that the game is still in its early stages of development and could perhaps be slated for a 2025 release window. We can, however, confirm that the game will exclusively launch on PC (through Steam), Xbox Series X/S and PS5. In the meantime, you can view the epic stills of the upcoming title from the devs' website here.

Additionally, we don't have information on the editions to expect. Granted that this is the studio's first title, we can't make any assumptions on its editions based on history. Since so many details remain scarce at the moment, we'll have to get back to you on most of its features. However, you can always follow the developer's official social media handle here to keep track of new updates. Meanwhile, we'll watch out for new information and let you know as soon as anything pops up.

So, what's your take? Will you pick up a copy of Thorgal when it drops? Let us know over on our socials here.
