2023 was a blissful year for action-adventure video game lovers. From Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to Marvel’s Spider-Man series’ sequel Spider-Man 2, fans had a big year. For developers, it’s time to drop whatever they have in store for 2024. With the year fast into the first stretch, fans can’t wait to catch the long-awaited sequels and classics poised to make 2024 a highlight year for this hybrid video game genre.

Of course, we all expect some jaw-dropping features thanks to technological advancements like AI that lay the foundation for futuristic game engines. We certainly have an idea of what’s coming in the first few months, but the anticipation is pretty much for what are believed to be the most spectacular releases of the year. Filled with mesmerizing stories and gameplay mechanics, here are the most anticipated action-adventure games of 2024.

5. Skull and Bones

Skull and Bones: The Game Awards Trailer

Drawing inspiration from Ubisoft Montreal’s Assasin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Ubisoft Singapore is set to unleash the long-awaited action game Skull and Bones on February 16, 2024. The game will be available for Microsoft Windows, Ubisoft Connect, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Amazon Luna.

The title ranks high among the most-awaited games of the year, having been in development for over a decade now. Only some fans enjoyed the privilege of testing the mettle in the latest 6-hour closed beta that ran between the 15th and 18th of December. And from the playthrough, Skull and Bones is Ubisoft Singapore’s magnum opus.

It’s a pretty impressive standalone action-adventure game with a rousing storyline about the golden age of pirates. The phenomenal gameplay begins with you as the bold pirate captain who defies the kingpin and ventures into dangerous naval warfare. You can start in a single-player mode or gather ruthless gangs to battle on the disputed Indian Ocean. The goal is to topple those in power and become the most fearsome pirate captain to rule the lawless waters.

4. Earth From Another Sun

Earth From Another Sun - Gameplay Trailer (2022) - MMO/FPS/RPG

The action-adventure video game genre has a ton of excellent FPS video game titles. But Earth From Another Sun levels up with a unique outer space setting and hundreds of combat tools. Multiverse has put in the work for more than three years and undoubtedly nails it on one of the most anticipated action-adventure games set to be released in 2024 for Microsoft Windows.

From multiple gun mods, character powers, and gadgets to combat vessels like tanks, hoverbikes,  space fortresses, fighter crafts, drones, and more. Earth From Another Sun literally gives you all the tools you need to explore the galaxy and conquer it.

The sci-fi action-adventure game happens in the galaxy, an ever-evolving space world with multiple locations to explore. You command an army through iconic space battles with various fighting builds for your army. Enemies have equally sophisticated weapons, tools, and abilities, making combat even more aggressive and exciting. Multiverse spices up the grind with calamities, treasures, and some love interests, making Earth From Another Sun a must-try addition to the action-adventure hybrid.

3. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth

LIKE A DRAGON: INFINITE WEALTH | ENGLISH STORY TRAILER

Ryu Ga Gotoku is set to release Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth on January 26, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows, and Xbox One. It is a direct spin-off from the 2023 installation Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. It's the fans' awaited ninth release of the popular Like A Dragon series.

As a direct sequel to the 2020 title, Yakuza: Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth players will still have Kasuga and Kiryu as the main protagonists. But fans will catch Infinite Wealth gameplay in Hawaii for the first time, although the usual Japanese locale is still there.

For players who've had some time with the prequel, Infinite Wealth will be pretty familiar and enjoyable to play. You still control Kiryu and Kasuga along with their team in turn-based battles. You can pit characters into different classes or jobs with distinctive missions and playstyles while enjoying benefits unique to each player. Most of the game features return with a couple of new characters and enjoyable minigames.

2. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Launch Trailer

Prince of Persia is not necessarily a fresh installation in the video games scene. Although it’s been a while since the release of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands in 2010. The upcoming game is a continuation of the Prince of Persia series, but with The Lost Crown the first major installment of the franchise, fans are eagerly waiting for its launch. The action-adventure video game comes with a touch of Metroidvania aspects, happening in Mount Qaf, the cursed city. You traverse the city’s map through the shortcuts and hidden rooms to rescue Prince Ghassan.

Playing as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown’s Sargon is quite an experience, thanks to his abilities and the swift game controls. You can air dash, slide, or jump to move across the platforms, occasionally unlocking time-based abilities that you can alter for platforming and combat purposes. As you progress through the game, weapons upgrades are available with the time crystals, and in case you missed a puzzle, you can screenshot and pin it to the map for later. The sequel is set for release on January 18, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows.

1. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League | Official Justice League Trailer - “No More Heroes”

Apart from its famed gameplay, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has been delayed multiple times since 2022, and that’s part of what makes it one of the most anticipated action-adventure games of 2024. We can only hope Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. have everything set for the game’s release on February 2, 2024, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The game masterfully follows the storyline of its prequel, Batman: Arkham Knight, to give players a filmic adventure of the DC world. But what’s a little disturbing and exciting at the same time is the fact that you witness a lot of death. In fact, you will be killing players you love and letting the awfulness sink in.

Brainiac has invaded the universe and brainwashed the Justice League team, including Batman, Flash, Superman, and Green Lantern. Only Wonder Woman is yet to fall completely under the alien’s control. You now have to control the Suicide Squad, a task force aiming to free the Justice League from Brainiac. Players can choose to take on the mission in a single-player mode, but the four-player cooperative mode will probably be more enjoyable.
