Cowboys? Aliens? Dinosaurs? Sure, why not. It seems that in this day and age, if you aren’t spouting out weird concepts like it’s your day job, then your project is just about destined to fail. That being said, there definitely seems to be a lack of dinosaur games on today’s market. Does that technically warrant a cowboy shooter with prehistoric influences? No. But then, I’d also be lying if I said I wasn’t the slightest bit intrigued about such an otherworldly combination. And so, for that, Son and Bone, I say thank you. I’ll bite.

The Turok-like first-person shooter isn’t due out for a short while yet, so you may want to find an alternative way to get your daily dose of chaos. Nevertheless, if you are interested in learning all there is to know about TeamKill Media’s upcoming project, then be sure to read on for all the latest developments. Here’s everything we can currently tell you about Son and Bone.

What Is Son and Bone?

Prehistoric setting in Son and Bone

Son and Bone is a first-person shooter in which players take on the role of a gun-toting cowboy in a world populated by dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. With that, expect to delve into a lightning fast narrative that not only packs some serious heat, but serves out bullets more than it does flesh-hungry carnivores. Think Serious Sam meet Jurassic Park: Survival, and you’ll be on the right track. And if not that, then DOOM meets Turok.

Son and Bone will feature a number of new features, many of which will drift aside from those showcased in TeamKill Media’s earlier game, Quantum Error. In other words, don’t expect to see any flavors of cosmic horror here; Son and Bone will be something of a much, much different species.

Story

Dinosaur encounter in Son and Bone

Going by the teaser that the devs left out to dry earlier this week, the story will center its focus around one Sheriff Sam Judge—a rootin’-tootin’, bandit-hating gunslinger who, whilst out hunting a set of outlaws, winds up being sent into the depths of a prehistoric world.

“When a local farm in Patchwork, MT is attacked by a group of notorious bandits, Sheriff Sam Judge sets out to bring them to justice by any means necessary and save the hostage they have taken,” the game’s description reads. “But on his journey, through the mysterious motives of those he pursues, Sam finds himself transported to another world overrun with prehistoric creatures and dinosaurs and must fight for his life to make it back to earth.”

Well, there you have it. It’s a classic setup: gun-slinging Sheriff sets out to right a few wrongs, but is ultimately thrown into an entirely different realm—an archipelago of zones in which dinosaurs dominate the board. As for how you’ll get out of said sticky situation is another story. Either way, it’s likely to involve having to shoot a T. Rex in the face — or something like that.

Gameplay

Dinosaur in Son and Bone

We’ve caught several hints of gameplay since the project was first brought to the table earlier this month, which has helped us to confirm the fact that, as far as love letters go, Son and Bone is a bit of an old flame of DOOM. And not just DOOM, but just about any chaotic first-person shooter in which players are able to utilize body parts and other mechanical tools to decapitate their enemies. That’s all present and accounted for in Son and Bone, from the looks of it, so expect plenty of big kills, and a whole lot of stylish combos.

Aside from its high-octane combat, Son and Bone will also feature a wide selection of prehistoric locales to blast your way through in a DOOM-like fashion. Again, very DOOM-y, from the sounds of it, so expect big guns, and even bigger opponents. Like, dinosaur-sized sort of big.

Development

It was only in November of last year that developer TeamKill Media released Quantum Error, a sci-fi cosmic horror game, for PlayStation 5. Suffice to say, the team behind both games have had their hands full these past couple of years. But as luck would have it, the team will be striking whilst the iron is still hot by bringing Son and Bone to its chosen platforms as early as 2024. So, clearly, they’re not one for taking a break, then.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Waterfall in Son and Bone

Son and Bone will be arriving on PlayStation 5 at some point in 2024. As it is, of course, exclusive to PlayStation, this does mean that it won’t be available on the likes of Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, or PC anytime soon. Still, never say never. With any luck, it’ll be shedding its exclusivity at some stage in early 2025. Don’t take our word for it, though.

As it stands, there aren’t any special editions to get ahold of, nor are there are digital deluxe copies with added bonuses to bolt on to the base game, either. However, if something of the sort does come about at any point over the next several weeks or months, then TeamKill Media is likely to post an update over on its social feed.
