Although they are currently some great offerings, expect this list to see a lot of change with flashier and bolder arena shooters to come. However, as of right now, these games are leading the arena shooter genre and will surely feed your frenzy for fire.

5. Turbo Overkill

Turbo Overkill | Announcement Trailer

The newest and most recent arena shooter that is gaining popularity on next-gen is Turbo Overkill. Recently released on April 22, 2022, Turbo Overkill is all about fast-paced, rootin' tootin' shootin' gameplay set in a futuristic cyberpunk setting. You play as Johnny Turbo, who is burdened with cleaning up Paradise, a cyber city that has become overrun with augmented half-metal half-human murdering machines. These augmented beings are controlled by Syn, the world's most advanced AI on a mission to take over the world.

Turbo Overkill is inspired by the best arena shooters of the past, such as Doom, Quake, and Duke Nukem, but it pushes the gameplay concepts on next-gen. Like Turbo Time which is a brand new form of slow motion. You can also wall-run, dash, and even slide in on your chainsaw leg tearing up enemies in your path. Or use you're rocket arms and grappling hook to rain death from above. Whatever the situation may be, you are expertly prepared for a gory, chaotic, and wild fight in Turbo Overkill.

4. Splitgate

Splitgate - Official Console Release Date Trailer | Summer of Gaming 2021

The latest hype in sci-fi arena shooters is Splitgate. The game takes a brand new take on multiplayer FPS arena shooters by adding Portal Combat to change up the battlefield. All players have the ability to place portals throughout the map. That means you have to be aware of all possible angles, players flying out at a moment's notice, or one looking to creep up on you're flank. This takes movement, position, and strategy to a whole new level.

Plus you'll get some of the greatest satisfaction ever when you fly out of a portal and land a perfect no-scope headshot on a confused player. Just make sure you're prepared for arena-shooter try-hards, as Splitgate has seen a lot of them due to its smooth and fast gameplay. However, you can knock this out with the 15 casual game modes across 20 unique maps. On top of that, there is character customization and even a competitive scene for those looking to test their skills against the best.

3. Shadow Warrior 3

Shadow Warrior 3 | Launch Trailer | Out Now

If you're a fan of the Doom franchise, one game surely worth checking out is Shadow Warrior 3. Released on March 1, 2022, Shadow Warrior 3 combines the best of first-person arena shooter combat with fast-paced gunplay and a free-running movement system. Which lets you air dash, wall run, double jump and use a grappling hook to maneuver your terrain. Not to mention it also pairs extremely well with wielding a Katana.

We won't lie, if you've played Doom, this game is a very similar concept and style to it. Evidently, it also has epic but gory finishing moves and a barrage of high-powered guns to spam. If you're just looking for a light and amusing arena shooter to pick up, then Shadow Warrior 3 is a solid pick. The campaign is only about 6-8 hours until completion, and its gameplay will have you engaged constantly throughout.

Quake - Official Trailer (2021)

Some people may not be aware that one of the best arena shooters of all time was recently remade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. That title of course being the original Quake. Every arena shooter on this list, that you've ever played, or ever will play stems its roots from Quake. That's why having the chance to experience the original authentic version of Quake on next-gen is one you definitely don't want to miss out on.

The game also comes with the original expansion packs, “The Scourge of Armagon” and “Dissolution of Eternity”. On top of that, there are two new expansion packs developed by Machine Games known as “Dimensions of the Past” and “Dimension of the Machine”. The game also supports online and local multiplayer, with that split-screen co-op.

1. DOOM Eternal

DOOM Eternal – Official E3 Story Trailer

Without a doubt, the leader of the arena shooter genre on PlayStation 5 and Xbox series X/S consoles is DOOM Eternal. The franchise is actually one of the longest-running arena shooters of all time, originally debuting in 1993. Since then there have been many additions to the series, but notably, one of the highest praised is DOOM Eternal. You have one last chance to stop hell's armies from multiple dimensions from invading and conquering Earth. And in classic Doom fashion, it's on a gigantically epic scale.

Upgraded with a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, wrist blades, and brand new guns, mods, and abilities, you've never been more prepared to slay demons. This truly is the highlight of the Doom franchise, and the epic gameplay the series is known for is best represented in DOOM Eternal.  The campaign lasts approximately 14 hours and will keep you entertained throughout.
