Lollipop Chainsaw 2023: Remake or Remaster?

Dragami Games will be bringing 2012's cult classic hack and slash game Lollipop Chainsaw to current-gen hardware next year. The question is, will it teeter more towards being a complete remake, or settle for a run-of-the-mill remaster?

Dragami Games' Yoshima Yasuda recently took to Twitter to answer a volley of questions about the upcoming release of Lollipop Chainsaw. Although originally coined as a remake, Yasuda did go on to talk about the ultimate goal of the game, which is, in essence, to develop a remastered edition, complete with as many original properties as possible.

“The primary goal of the Lollipop Chainsaw Remake project is to make it so that players who wish to play Lollipop Chainsaw can do so easily, not to make a new Lollipop Chainsaw game,” the statement reads. “Of course, the ideal thing to do would be to make a remastered version of the original game, changing nothing. However, we were unfortunately unable to include 16 of the licensed songs, which were a great part of the original game's feel, so we are instead aiming for a remake that is as close as possible to a remaster.”

Will anything change?

“We believe that Lollipop Chainsaw‘s story is a huge part of what fans love about the original game, and we, the development staff, feel the same,” the statement continues. “As such, the story will not be changed in the remake.”

From this, it seems as though the upcoming version with be more of a polished rerun than anything else. Not that this is a bad thing, as the original game has been unplayable ever since it launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The question that remains, of course, is how close to the original will the 2.0 actually get? Only time will tell on that one.

Lollipop Chainsaw currently sits with a rough 2023 release slate. At present, it's unclear whether the game will launch on all platforms, or just current-gen consoles. For all the latest updates, you can follow the official social feed here.
