Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess

Suppose Venom and the colossal beasts in Jurassic Park had a baby. In that case, we'd have an uncanny apocalyptic season that would definitely wipe out half of humanity. But since that's all fictitious, how about experiencing this terror in a game?

Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess is an upcoming title that is a fresh bun in Capcom's oven. This studio needs no introduction since they are the masterminds behind the greatest hits in the gaming industry; Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, etc.

Capcom unveiled the game during the Xbox Games Showcase, and the exciting news is that it'll be on Game Pass from day one. Want to find out more? Here's everything we know about Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess.

What is Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess?

Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess

Kunitsu Gami: Path of The Goddess is a horror-themed third-person action strategy game set in Japan. The game features a blend of Onimusha-like graphics. Onimusha, another title from Capcom is yet to see a new release since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.

If you're new to the Onimusha scene, allow me to elaborate. The game’s environment draws heavily from Japanese artistic styles, themes, and cultural aesthetics, creating a visually distinct and immersive experience that reflects its Japanese feudal setting.

Now that you're all caught up, let's dive back in.

Capcom has released very little info about the game. Still, given the studio's impeccable streak, we may be in for another massive hit.

Story

Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess

From the gameplay trailer, it seems our protagonist, a male character of Japanese descent, will be going against perturbing monsters based on Japanese folklore. The game's plot tells a tale of a sacred mountain defiled by the residents who live on it. The mountain's ruin opens a portal that gives access to the spirited worlds.

Soon, blights known as The Seethe gain access through the portal, destroying the human world. To fix this, the Spirit Stone Maiden must perform a ritual with the help of a guide and a protector.

Aside from the above, we know we are in for an epic clash between man and the spirit realm. Also in the purview of the studio's game history, Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess is said to be a spiritual successor of Shinsekai: Into the Depths and Okami.

From the horse's mouth:

“Fend off foul creatures and lead the Spirit Stone Maiden on her path. Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess is a brand new title which upholds Capcom's legacy of original and innovative works. This labor of love follows in the tradition of truly unique titles such as Okami and Shinsekai – Into the Depths. Explore an incredible world in which traditional Japanese aesthetics are brought to stunning life by the power of RE Engine. Enjoy a unique gameplay experience blending action and strategy. Witness an epic clash between the spirit realm and mortal man.”

Gameplay

Speaking during their Showcase, Capcom revealed that the new IP, inherent in Japanese folklore theme, is a single-player action RPG. You play as the masked protagonist whose role is to fight off the Seethe, who are drawn to the corrupted flora and fauna. The Seethe are a colossal impediment to the Spirit Stone Maiden's task, which is to perform a rite that cleanses and restores the land.

The trailer shows the protagonist using his sword to create a clear path for the maiden. The hero also uses a hack-and-slash attack in addition to melee techniques. It's pretty evident this game will harmoniously mold together the precise art of strategic strikes.

Without a doubt, this enigmatic Kunitsu-Gami title emerges as a daring and boundary-pushing venture reminiscent of an indie gem within Capcom's portfolio. The enthralling artistic aesthetics undoubtedly captures your attention. But to be fair,  a deeper dive into the gameplay mechanics would have truly elevated the experience.

Development

From what we know so far, Shuichi Kawata is piecing the game together. Shuichi is the pioneer of most Capcom streaking games, including Shinsekai: Into the Depths Resident Evil 4 & 5, and plenty of other projects at Capcom. What's more, this is the latest project from Capcom Dev 1. The same department handled the swift and successful release of Devil May Cry and Resident Evil.

To top it off, the RE engine powers the game. For those unfamiliar with this engine, it's a mastermind creation by Capcom. The engine was originally created for Resident Evil: Biohazard. However, the studio has used it for other games, including Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter.
