Die After Sunset: Everything We Know

Playstark and PQube have finally stapled a 2023 release window to the seemingly overcooked shooter-looter Die After Sunset. Question is, what has actually changed in the year-long twilight phase that has kept the game in early access, and when can we expect to see it in motion on consoles and PC? Well, therein lies a question that publisher PQube recently released an answer to. And not just the one answer, but a whole line of details all relating to the upcoming roguelite ARPG.

So, what do you need to know about it ahead of its release? Well, here's everything we can currently tell you based on the information that has already been provided. Die After Sunset: what, when, and most importantly, why the long wait?

What Is Die After Sunset?

Die After Sunset is an upcoming third-person shooter-looter ARPG by Playstark. Brought to PC via early access back in February 2022, the roguelite launched with “hundreds of items, unique quests, monstrous bosses and hordes of enemies”—features that will now find their way to consoles and PC later this year.

Die After Sunset has been referred to as a love letter to a myriad of games—Fortnite, Borderlands, and Sunset Overdrive, to name but a few. And it's easy to see why, as it fosters a gameplay structure that relies on both randomized spawns, and loot that can be obtained to unlock better equipment. Add the fact that it also features bullet sponges for enemies, and it makes up what can only be described as an ode to some of the best shooter games of the past generation. And that's putting it lightly, all things considered.

Story

Going by the blurb, Die After Sunset will transport you to the year of 2120—a year that supposedly hosts the downfall of civilization, and the final battles between humans and an alien species known as “Murkors.” In this undying feud between races, players will take control of one of humanity's last defenders, and in a bid to reclaim the world, will make a series of final stands for the sake of mankind, all before the sun sets and the clock repeats itself.

“The year is 2120,” the blurb reads. “An alien race referred to as the “Murkors” have invaded every corner of earth with their unrivalled power and… rubber duck hats. The resistance holds out to prevent the extinction of humanity, but not for long. It’s up to you as a defender of earth to level up and take on the murkor hordes… before the sun sets.”

Gameplay

Die After Sunset, being the typical shooter-looter that it is, will base most of its gameplay around completing randomized quests, looting chests for valuable upgrades and currency, and developing your character to be able to embark on higher-paying runs. And that's just it — the game itself will ask not that you shovel through it, but stick with it as you evolve your character and unlock new skills and abilities. To make so much as a dent in its world, you will of course need to grind quests, bag loot, and take lives — repeatedly.

“You will be met with murkors shortly after spawning into Waikiki Beach. Be alert, defender… and FIGHT IN THE LIGHT,” the blurb elaborates. “Murkors draw their power from the shadows, growing in size and strength. Strategically position yourself so the sun is always beaming down on you, and your enemies.”

Development

To our best knowledge, Die After Sunset has been in early access since February 2022. Since then, Playstark has added a slew of additional features—content that has mostly helped flesh out the gameplay experience, in general. And by that, we're essentially talking more quests, skill trees, and enemies to obliterate.

The good news is, Die After Sunset is finally in line to receive its proper console and PC upload. And while Playstark has yet to mention anything about the game coming to ex-gen hardware, the fact is Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC are all prepping to roll out the red carpet. If all goes according to plan, then we should see it hit the shelves later this summer. Don't take our word for that, though.

So, has Die After Sunset caught your eye? You're in luck, we Playstark did in fact release a trailer for the game a fair ways back. And while there are still plenty of details that could do with some context, the general aesthetic has very much been painted in black and white. Need we say more? You can see it for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Die After Sunset will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC via Steam in 2023. It isn't clear when in 2023 it'll release, though its listing on Amazon does state a July 26 window, so there's that to consider. If this turns out to be legitimate, then Playstark is bound to confirm it either through a release date trailer, or via its website.

Right now, there aren't any special editions outside of the standard copy on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. According to its press release, there'll only be a digital version available for the Switch and PC ports, neither of which will feature any pre-order bonuses or perks.
