FEROCIOUS: Everything We Know

For those who’ve been yearning to return to the tainted roots of a lost civilization, FEROCIOUS could very well be able to scratch that itch. As it turns out, there’s a new type of survival-crafting game on the block, and one that’ll just so happen to bring a horde of dinosaurs and other dangerous beasts to an entirely new “Lost World.” In other words, if you’re something of a die-hard fan of either The Forest or Exoprimal, then you’ll probably have something to tide you over in OMYOG’s upcoming sandbox chapter.

FEROCIOUS isn’t due out for a fair while yet, but if you are interested in learning all there is to know about it, then be sure to read on for all the latest developments. Here’s everything we can currently tell you about the dinosaur-centric universe.

What Is FEROCIOUS?

In the words of developer OMYOG, “FEROCIOUS is a first-person shooter that combines a sense of wonder of exploring a mysterious prehistoric island with over-the-top action gameplay.” As such, players can expect to delve deep into the roots of an unchartered fantasy—a locale in which dinosaurs roam freely, and the vast majority of its inhabitants are either dead, or left to pluck the bare bones of a fractured environment.

From what we’ve gathered so far, it seems that FEROCIOUS will take a page or two out of Stranded Deep or The Forest’s book, in the fact that it’ll feature a mixture of survival-horror, and a wide range of custom scenarios and crafting elements. A sandbox game at heart, players will have the opportunity to weave their own stories from within this “Lost World,” which will incorporate a selection of mythical secrets, as well as a number of long-forgotten biomes to unlock.

Story

According to the devs, “your adventure begins after a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean, where you awaken on the shores of a deadly island. As one of the few survivors, you must navigate deadly encounters with prehistoric creatures and armed mercenaries. Uncover the dark truth hidden within this enigmatic landscape as you fight for survival, explore treacherous terrains, and unveil the secrets lurking within FEROCIOUS‘ timeless “Lost World” setting.”

Going by the blurb, it sounds as if FEROCIOUS will be giving its players a whole lot of freedom right from the get-go. Aside from the fact that there’ll be a prologue, of sorts, it appears that the overarching narrative will be something only the players themselves will be able to tailor. So, the question is this: what will you do to survive the aforementioned Lost World? Or better yet, how will you go about surviving the day-to-day when all odds are evidently against your favor?

Gameplay

Fans of the upcoming game have compared it to King Kong — and understandably so. Aside from the raw action sequences that you’ll need to shovel through, the Lost World itself will also present numerous opportunities to unravel pieces of lore, as well as delve deep into territories that no person has ever seen before. There’ll be combat, crafting, and a ludicrous amount of exploration — three quality ingredients that make up, well, most modern-day sandbox hits, in all fairness.

OMYOG boasts an “immersive and visually stunning prehistoric environment,” as well as a “dynamic and interactive world teeming with life and ripe for exploration.” Evidently so, what with a lot of its current sneak previews showcasing some pretty stunning locales and environmental effects. But as for how big this world will be, however, is still anybody’s guess. Even still, if you were fond of games like Turok or Far Cry Primal, then you’re sure to find solace in this indie segment.

Development

The team behind FEROCIOUS, OMYOG, first lifted the veil on the project back in 2021, at which point the game received a debut trailer and a slew of in-game screenshots. Since then, the project has popped up several times, with the most recent being at the PC Gamer Showcase 2023. Going by that, the game will be releasing at some stage in 2024, and on all the major platforms, to boot.

In case you missed out on the initial announcement, the game is being published by TinyBuild, a firm best known for titles such as Hello Neighbor and Potion Craft. OMYOG, on the other hand, is a relatively new independent studio, and one that, at least at the time of writing, only has the one credit in its portfolio: FEROCIOUS.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

FEROCIOUS will be heading to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam at some point in 2024. Unfortunately, that does mean Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users will have to seek alternate routes when the game does decide to plant roots on its chosen platforms. Will there be an ex-gen port at some point in the future? It’s hard to say. However, it definitely appears that the game will be locked to newer consoles on arrival.
