Exoprimal: Everything We Know

So Dino Crisis didn't receive its spiritual successor — what are you going to do about it? Well, from the looks of Capcom's latest project, discover new fossils, apparently. That's because, quite frankly, the hopes of ever seeing a revival of Dino Crisis is dead and buried, whereas Exoprimal, on the other hand, remains to rise like a prehistoric phoenix from the ashes. And that's exactly what it'll be: a phoenix, bred by the same studio, and in receipt of almost all of the same elements. Well played, Capcom.

So, what exactly do you need to know about the upcoming dinosaur-themed team-based shooter? Well, here's everything we've been able to collect based on the details Capcom has provided to date. Exoprimal: what is it, and why should you be prepping to slot it under your wing this year?

What Is Exoprimal?

Exoprimal is an upcoming online team-based shooter by Capcom. Set in the year 2040, players will be invited to join the battle to prevent humanity's downfall against one of the deadliest foes on the planet — dinosaurs. And not just in epic online-only battles, but in feature-length story missions set around an entirely separate mode, Dino Survival.

In Capcom's own words: “Exoprimal is an online, team-based action game that pits humanity's cutting-edge exosuit technology against history's most ferocious beasts – dinosaurs. Exosuits are grouped into different roles, and players will pilot these exosuits to hold firm against overwhelming dinosaur swarms in online-only, team-based action game modes.”

Sadly, as there is no offline campaign to speak of, it does mean players will need a stable connection to be able to enrol in the missions and its various game modes. It hasn't been said yet whether or not there are any single-player story modes in the pipeline, either. So, if you're all for online-only action, then you're all set.

Story

It's 2040, and the world as we know it has been engulfed in an everlasting war between humans and dinosaurs. This is where you, armed with an exosuit, will venture forth and make your final stand against the hostile beasts in a bid to reclaim what's rightfully yours. It's time to prove humanity's worth and take your rivals back to the prehistoric phase from which they came.

“The corporation Aibius has developed a hyper-advanced AI called Leviathan that can predict the location of future outbreaks,” the blurb adds. “This technology, along with Aibius's revolutionary powered suits, or exosuits, gives humanity a fighting chance to stem the tide of the saurian swarms.”

By the looks of it, those equipped with exosuits will be dispatched to possible outbreak zones around the world, from which objectives will need to be completed in order to drive back the dinosaurs and its evolved offspring, the Neosaurs.

Gameplay

Exoprimal will feature three types of exosuit: assault, tank, and support. Equipped with one of the three available mech suits, you will embark on combat-heavy missions all over the world, as a team, and fight against one common enemy — an elite species of dinosaur known to the human race as Neosaurs. According to the blurb, you will have the chance to switch between exosuits mid-battle, adding more flexibility to your playstyle.

According to Capcom, the primary mode will be Dino Survival, which will pit two teams of five against one another over a series of objectives. Unlike your everyday online shooter, however, teams will be forced to band together on occasion in order to defeat a common threat.

“In Dino Survival, the missions change based on players' progression through the game,” the description adds. “The experience will be different with each match, even in matches with familiar surroundings and objectives. Players can unlock story sequences by playing Dino Survival and also earn rewards such as experience points to increase player and exosuit levels.”

Development

Capcom first removed the veil on Exoprimal back at Sony's State of Play event, which aired in March 2022. Since then, the studio has posted numerous trailers and clippings of the game onto its channel, and not to mention a closed beta test, which ran between the March 17th and 19th.

Fortunately, Exoprimal will be heading to all major platforms, which includes Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. If all goes according to plan, the IP should be going live on July 14, 2023.
