Dead by Daylight x Alan Wake: Everything We Know

Alan Wake 2 Wins the Best Game Direction at The Game Awards 2023

To celebrate the recent success of Alan Wake II, Remedy Entertainment has made the collaborative effort alongside Dead by Daylight developer Behavior Interactive to rustle up a new Chapter for its universally acclaimed asymmetrical survival-horror IP. That’s right, Wake is back, as is the original voice actor, which can mean only one thing: The Dark Place isn’t quite done with the established author, nor those who’ve dared to lose themselves to the harrowing dimension these past several months.

Dead by Daylight x Alan Wake marks the beginning of a whole new era for the online horror series, which, at the time of writing, has been coughing up crossovers for just over seven years now. Care to hear the whole spiel ahead of its arrival? If so, then be sure to read on for all the latest developments. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest update.

What Is Dead by Daylight x Alan Wake?

For those who’ve yet to secure roots in Dead by Daylight, just know this: it’s an online asymmetrical survival-horror game, and one that essentially pits two factions against one another over a series of maps torn straight from various franchises. In previous seasons, we’ve seen the likes of The Ring, Silent Hill, and Halloween all join the roster. This time, however, it’s Alan Wake who’s joining the fold, which means players will be able to enter The Fog as the esteemed author.

“Since its launch in 2010, Alan Wake has influenced us on the Dead by Daylight team. Our games already feel connected in many ways. To finally see Alan come to the Fog as a Survivor feels like a full-circle moment,” says Mathieu Coté, Head of Partnerships at Behaviour Interactive.

“We are thrilled and honored to have Alan Wake enter the Fog of Dead by Daylight,” adds Sam Lake, Creative Director of Remedy Entertainment. “The lore of both games is surprisingly compatible, a true match in…hell. With Alan Wake 2 now out, the time is right for another nightmare to begin.”

Story

It’s common knowledge at this point that Alan Wake, being in the predicament that he is (something something Dark Place), is the most likely candidate to wind up in the shadowy corners of The Fog. As it turns out, there is, weirdly enough, a new manuscript in the works, and it just so happens to be an invitation to the Dead by Daylight realm.

In the words of Alan Wake himself: “As I searched for a way out, memories of a script I wrote for Night Springs about a fog-engulfed place flooded back. Surrounded by the same fog, I became a pawn—trapped. I must find a way out. Rewriting that script is key.”

From the sounds of it, the upcoming Chapter will play close to the heart of the script featured in Alan Wake II. However, rather than it centering its world around Alan’s attempts to escape from the Dark Place, it will opt for a new location—a written world in which the writer isn’t quite able to rewrite the conclusion. Not yet, anyway.

Gameplay

Aside from the usual treasure trove of technical and audiovisual updates, the Alan Wake update will also include several new Perks, including Champion of Light, Illumination, and Deadline. You can check out a full list of patch notes for the upcoming DLC via Behavior Interactive’s website here.

Champion of Light

  • ”While you are holding a flashlight, this perk activates. When you are shining a flashlight, you have 50% Haste. When you successfully blind the Killer, they also gain 20% Hindered for 6 seconds. This effect cannot stack with itself. Then, this perk goes on cool-down for 80/70/60 seconds.”

Illumination

  • “Press and hold the Ability button 1 near a Dull or Hex Totem to bless it and create a Boon Totem. Soft chimes ring out in a 24 meter range. Survivors inside your boon totem’s range see the aura of all chests and all generators in blue. If you have a lit boon totem, you cleanse or bless totems 6/8/10% faster. You can only bless one Totem at a time. All equipped boon perks are active on your Boon Totem.”

Deadline

  • “This perk activates when you are injured. Skill Checks appear 6/8/10% more frequently when repairing or healing and appear in random places. The penalty for missing skill checks is reduced by 50%.”

Development

Dead by Daylight x Alan Wake is the first Chapter to embrace the asymmetrical world since 2023’s Chucky—a DLC that was preceded by both Alien, and Nicolas Cage. All in all, Behavior Interactive has introduced a total of 33 Chapters over its seven-year tenure. Suffice it to say, Alan Wake isn’t likely to be the final DLC to arrive this year, either, what with the devs having released a new update every three months since its 2016 inception.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Alan Wake will be joining the Dead by Daylight roster as a new Survivor on January 30, 2024. Like the expansions that rolled out before it, the DLC will be available across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Mobile, and PC. So, hardly any cause for concern there, then.

Edition-wise, there isn’t a great deal to comment on. Like the other Chapters in the Dead by Daylight universe, the update will come packaged as a DLC, which means you will, of course, need to have the base game installed before purchasing the Alan Wake expansion. You can go ahead and add that to your library on all major consoles and PC from their respective store handles today.
