Best Crafting Games

Sometimes we prefer to get the job done ourselves. That's right, no helping hands, “I'll make it on my own” type beat. If you're on that self-made grind, then crafting games are most likely a good fit. Typical found in the survival genre, crafting games require you to put in the hard work of gathering X amount of resources in order to craft basic necessities such as food, shelter, or weapons and armor. Consequently, it's no secret that crafting games can be tedious, but they can also be immensely satisfying when all your effort and dedication pay off. Therefore, if you're looking for that level of satisfaction, turn to this list of the best crafting games on PlayStation 5 to provide it for you.

5. Subnautica: Below Zero

Subnautica: Below Zero Gameplay Trailer

The first game on this list of the best crafting games for PlayStation 5 is Subnautica: Below Zero. The original Subnautica game took gamers by storm with its revolutionary concept of crash-landing on an alien planet that is entirely made up of water. However, the follow-up, Subnautica: Below Zero, transports you on an icy underwater adventure with a completely different ocean habitat that can endure below-freezing temperatures.

From the get-go, the name of the game is to survive by building habitats, crafting tools, and exploring the mysteries that hide deep in the planet's depths. Compared to the original, you won't be completely drenched in water as Subnautica: Below Zero doe's have some progression to land where even more mysteries await. Nonetheless, Subnautica: Below Zero is a great survival adventure, largely because of its crafting and exploration components.

4. Rust Console Edition

Rust Console Edition - Gameplay Trailer | PS4

Rust is yet again another survival game with heavy crafting components, which is a common theme among the titles on this list. Nonetheless, Rust is an open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic radioactive wasteland. Literally starting you out butt naked on the beach, you must grab a rock, break down trees, and slowly work you're way up from there. Almost every stage of your progression in Rust requires crafting. From making yourself clothing and a bow, all the way to higher-end weapons and armor.

The crafting fun, however, doesn't stop there. A huge component in Rust's PvPvE gameplay is base-building. Because to no one's surprise, looting and killing are at an all-time high in this radioactive wasteland. So, you will need some shelter to get you through those lonely nights, and fortunately, base-building is entirely craft-based. Then, after creating a base, who knows what you'll aim for next—a helicopter? Overall, Rust is a crafting game as much as it is a survival game, and evidently why we consider it one of the best crafting games on PlayStation 5.

3. Stranded Deep

Stranded Deep - Co-Op Online Update | PS5, PS4

Another game where you're stranded all alone? Sadly yes. Fortunately, Stranded Deep does support multiplayer online co-op, so you can play it with a friend. Nonetheless, in this crafting game, you take on the role of a plane crash survivor who's stranded on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. You must scavenge, craft, and fight for your survival—and perhaps a way home—using what few resources you can find.

In Stranded Deep, everything from food to medicine and equipment to shelter requires crafting. The best part, though, is how creatively you can use the games' crafting. From cultivating land for food to setting up animal traps, and even building a helicopter so you can finally escape this desolate island. On top of its crafting components, Stranded Deep includes a good bit of action and mystery in its adventure. Therefore, we heartily recommend it if you're looking for the best crafting games on PlayStation 5.

2. Terraria

Terraria - Journeys End Update 1.4 | PS4

Terraria is a 2D open-world sandbox survival game where you dig, collect resources, craft, build, explore, and fight. However, being a sandbox you can play it however you want. But, considering you're looking for the best crafting games, then a majority of your time in Terraria will be spent spelunking. Because that's where you find treasure and raw materials that you need to “craft ever-evolving gear, machinery, and aesthetics.” Or perhaps you'll choose to build a home that acts as a community for hosting weary travelers.

All in all, there is a lot of leeway in how you choose to play Terraria. However, crafting is a core mechanic of the game regardless of how you wish to play it. It's just a lot more open-ended in comparison to the other crafting games in this list. Complete with randomly generated worlds, colorful characters, and open-ended mystery and exploration, Terraria is without a doubt the most comprehensive crafting game in this list.

1. Minecraft

Minecraft - Trails & Tales Update Launch Trailer | PS5 & PS4 & PSVR Games

To no one's surprise, Minecraft lands in the number one spot for the best crafting games on PlayStation 5. I mean, it's literally got “Mine” and “Craft” in the name. And, considering the insane amount of success it's garnered, we doubt the game needs any explanation. But if we had to describe it, all we could really say is that Minecraft is a crafting game in which you can create and construct pretty much anything you can imagine. The world is quite literally your oyster.

There is a vast world of crafting in Minecraft waiting to be discovered, from the game's casual survival mode to its creative build mode, and various multi-player mini-games. As a result, to this day it remains the best crafting game of all time.
