Although we were cooped up inside this winter, it wasn't all that bad considering we had two new exciting sci-fi games to play: The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space. The former ended 2022 off with a bang, while, the latter kicked the door open early as the best and biggest sci-fi title to release in the new year. However, as we step further into 2023 and the summer season approaches, many publishers are preparing to launch their highly anticipated releases. As a result, the best sci-fi games are still to come. So, without further ado, let's see what sci-fi games are still getting us excited about their upcoming release in 2023.
5. Kerbal Space Program 2
Kerbal Space Program, a cult classic, has been a favorite of many people for a variety of reasons. If you ask any fan of the game, they will blab on and on about its originality, creativity, chaotic fun, and replay value; though this is entirely justified. However, it has been some time since the original game was released, which is why fans are ecstatic about the long-awaited sequel, Kerbal Space Program 2. The thrilling challenge of achieving space flight has never been more exciting in what will surely be one of 2023's best sci-fi games.
With the brand new cosmic exploration, you can use interstellar travel technology to explore, discover, and build thriving colonies throughout the cosmos. Give your spaceships some personality with the new ability to customize each part in the reworked assembly interface, which makes building rockets much more seamless. Alongside a long list of new features, there is a brand-new soundtrack with original scores to immerse you in your never-ending embarkment of the solar system.
Kerbal Space Program 2 is available right now in early access. Furthermore, it's seeing new content added on a regular basis until the game is fully released. So don't miss out on your chance to get in early on one of the best sci-fi games up for grabs in 2023.
4. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is an open-world sci-fi adventure game based on James Cameron's Avatar film series. While it takes place on the familiar planet of Pandora as seen in the films, in the game you adventure through a never-before-seen region of it. With that in mind, you can certainly expect to encounter all new types of beauty and danger that the planet is known to hold.
In this spin-off, you play as a Na'vi in a standalone story. So you can bank on immersing yourself deep in the unique environment of Pandora, its creatures, and the Na'vi culture. At the same time, expect conflict with the ruthless RDA forces that threaten Pandora's world. So, keep an eye out for what very well could be one of the most impressionable sci-fi games of 2023.
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is praised as one of the best sci-fi games set in a dystopic post-apocalyptic setting. Evidently, that's why fans are holding their breath for the next installment in the series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Built on Unreal Engine 5, this entry makes use of cutting-edge technology by incorporating an advanced AI system. Furthermore, the nonlinear story allows players to openly explore the world while scavenging and taking on the game's combat at their will.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl also distinguishes itself by incorporating a brand-new multiplayer mode. Releasing shortly after the initial launch, you can expect some exciting PvP action with an arsenal of wasteland weapons. Ranging from shotguns to futuristic railguns that will pulverize any foe in your path. We can anticipate this title's release in April, as it prepares to be one of the best sci-fi games of 2023 and a potential must-play.
2. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Jedi: Survivor, the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, is set to be released on April 28. Because of the success of the first game, this is arguably one of the most anticipated sci-fi games releasing this year. Of course, we can anticipate a rich story with a new cast of memorable characters. But, of course not without our beloved heroic protagonist, Cal Kestis. This time, as a true Jedi, not as a padawan. As a result, now that he's learned how to use force and master his Jedi skills, playing as the hero should allow for a lot more possibility in combat – and it does.
New gameplay mechanics include brand-new lightsabers and stances. The best part is the new stances come equipped with a slew of new attacks, blocks, and parry moves. One of the most exciting new features of this is the new Force Stasis ability. This allows you to freeze enemies and their attacks in mid-air, allowing for some really interesting combat interactions.
After being announced in 2018, Bethesda's poster child title, Starfield has been in development for some time. Nonetheless, after a long wait with multiple delays, the game is expected to release sometime in 2023.
Starfields' open-world sci-fi adventure is set on a barren moon. And, from what we know so far, there is extensive customization ranging from character creation to the skill system and crafting. One of the most exciting features is the ability to completely customize your spaceship's style, layout, and operation. Each part and module has its own advantages and will cater to the type of ship you desire. With Bethesda known for immersive customization, we have no doubt they will knock this feature out of the park.
Although there is no multiplayer, this game will have a dense world with over 1,000 unique planets. All of which can be explored and harvested with various materials. Because of the game's size, you can join a variety of factions to pick from as you progress through the storyline and receive assistance against the space pirates and raiders. Starfield is one of the year's most anticipated sci-fi games and has been building high expectations for a while. So, we just hope it delivers on them and doesn't pull a No Man's Sky.
