The Game Awards 2022 were chock-full of surprises regarding new game releases in the coming year. However, one of the most thrilling announcements came from Cal Kestis actor Cameron Monaghan when he took the stage to reveal Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This new installment in EA's Star Wars series will have a considerably darker tone, with new characters, lightsabers, and of course, a ton of Jedi adventures to embark on.

So, read on if you want to find out what's in store for the Star Wars Jedi sequel.

Release Date and Platforms?

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Everything We Know

Not only was the sequel announced at The Game Awards 2022, but it also arrived with a release date. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will release on March 17, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. In the grand scheme of things, that date is not far off. However, EA has a history of delaying games before their initial scheduled release date. So, while we believe developer Respawn and publisher EA are on the right track, you can never be too sure. Take, Battlefield 2042 for example, which saw a series of delays before finally releasing.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Trailer

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Official Reveal Trailer

Cameron Monaghan wrapped up his time on stage at the 2022 Game Awards with the game's official reveal trailer. Safe to say, it did its job of getting us excited about what's to come. Aside from the flurry of new moves shown in the teaser, which indicates that Cal Kestis is far from a padawan in this iteration, the trailer highlighted the game's new lightsaber styles. In the trailer, you can catch our Jedi dual-wielding light sabers, using a Darth Maul-inspired twin-sided saber, and, of course, a Kylo Ren-style lightsaber at the end.

Surely enough, the new lightsabers were the big highlight from the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor reveal trailer. Not only should it open up tons of playstyles to the game, but the new moves being added to the game will open it up even further. Then consider adding the force into the mix, and you can get pretty creative with your Jedi fighting style. But like we said, Cal Kestis is no padawan in this version and is truly starting to realize his potential. So, as we would suspect he's got a few new tricks up his sleeve.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Story

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

According to the game's steam page, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor “picks up 5 years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and follows Cal’s increasingly desperate fight as the galaxy descends further into darkness.” Taking on new and familiar enemies, Cal Kestis, one of the last standing Jedi Knights will have to decide how far he is willing to go protect the legacy of the Jedi Order. Though that doesn't give us much detail into what will ensue, you can expect it to deliver an even bigger galactic scale, with that, a darker one too.

Evidently, we say that because not only will the story feature a host of new characters, but planets as well. Each of these will hold unique biomes, mysteries, and enemies to face. Furthermore, all of them will reward you with new abilities, weapons, and equipment. So, make sure you're stepping off the beaten path in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, as “players who adventure beyond the horizon will find hidden rewards.” While we're not exactly sure what this entails, you can bet we'll be searching the galaxy far and wide to find all these rewards if it means furthering the gameplay and combat.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Gameplay & Combat

Though we don't have a gameplay trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor yet, we suspect one is due to release soon. With that said, we can confirm the game will feature a ton of new Force abilities and moves for your Lightsabers. Which ultimately will see you combining them together to create beautiful cinematic fights. That is why it is worthwhile to spend some time exploring the games worlds. As discovering new skills, weapons, and equipment will only expand your playstyle possibilities.

This will also pay off as the game is said to feature an “expanded host of enemies”. All of which will surely come with their own strengths and weaknesses. Evidently, the more plays you got in your bag of tricks, the better off you'll be taking on enemies of different sizes and strengths. So, while the precise gameplay details are largely unknown, you should expect a considerably more advanced combat system in this sequel.

Who is the Cal Kestis Actor?

Cal Kestis is modeled after his voice actor, Cameron Monaghan. First introduced into the role in Fallen Order, Monaghan will be re-taking his role in the sequel Jedi Survivor. Cameron Monaghan is best known for his role in Shameless, as Ian Gallagher, if you thought you recognized him as a familiar face. He's one of the few actors, who are now stepping in to model the main character in action-adventure games. Something that five years ago, wasn't a thing. However, we really saw it take flight with Normas Reedus modeling the protagonist role in Death Stranding. Another example can be seen with Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077. Nonetheless, we're all for the actor's role in this game, and excited to see what lies ahead for his journey as Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
