Despite being a widely popular fictional character, who's amassed notoriety firstly via comics and thusly movies, Hellboy was yet to see a solid videogame based on his narrative. That was until Dark Horse Games revealed Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, the studio's first release, at the 2022 Game Awards. Finally, players are getting a dark and gritty game that brings them to the underground as the biggest bad boy in town. And we can't think of anyone more perfect for the job than the team taking on the project.
Though Hellboy: Web of Wryd is being published by Upstream Arcade and created by Good Shepherd Entertainment, they are not undertaking the project alone. In fact, they are developing the game in collaboration with Dark Horse Games. Which is the gaming subsidiary of Dark Horse Comics, the original Hellboy comics publisher. But that's not all. Mike Mignola, the original writer of the Hellboy comics, has also agreed to assist with the project. So, rest assured, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is in more than competent hands with that team at the precipice. And with that Knowledge, you're probably overflowing with excitement waiting for this game to drop. So, to get you prepared here's everything there is to know about the game thus far.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd was originally unveiled at the Game Awards with its world premiere trailer, which we've embedded above. Safe to say, this trailer elicited a strong reaction from the audience during the event. Since many fans have been longing for a Hellboy videogame and which came as a sweet surprise during the show. But the trailer delivered Hellboy, and all his glory in a comic style, with some great action sequences. Surely enough furthering our excitement for this game's release. Speaking of…
4. Release Date
Although many of us expected a potential release date or possibly a release window to accompany the end of the trailer, there wasn't. That means the game is presently trapped in the “To be announced” stage, with no indication of when it will be released. If we had to guess, we would guess the game will release in the second half of 2023, though that's purely speculation.
For the time being, we must be patient and trust that Dark Horse Games and Mike Mignola know what they are doing. Because, with the original creative mind behind the game, there's no doubt we're getting an immersive and dark gritty title that will undoubtedly exceed our expectations. This is why we'll wait as long as it takes to get this game perfected and in a ready-to-play state.
On the brighter side of things, we do know of the platforms the game will be released on. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd will arrive on all platforms, that includes: PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PS4/PS5- as indicated by the world premiere trailer. So, thankfully, regardless of what system you game on, you can experience Mike Mignola's, handcrafted Hellboy videogame adaptation. It's also refreshing to see this game arrive on all platforms, considering the number of new games released as exclusives in this day of age.
2. Graphics & Gameplay
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is described as a 3rd personal rogue-lite action adventure. With Mike Mignola at the forefront of the game's narrative. However, that doesn't give justice to the game's art style. As you may have noticed from the global premiere video, is being done in a comic graphic style. This is undeniably appealing, considering the dark and grim story we're most likely embarking on in this game. But, with a graphic design that is a true love letter to comic books, we wouldn't be surprised to see this game as a potential nominee for Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2023. Assuming it launches before next year's event, which we expect it will.
In terms of gameplay, it appears that the combat will feature heavy, hard-hitting melee combat. A perfect fit to match the fighting prowess we know love and know the character for. Of course, we can't forget about Hellboy's legendary revolver, which will aid you in ranged attacks. As for the foes you're going up against, you can expect about everything and anything. After all, we're talking about the underworld, which is full of collosol enemies, demons, and everything in between.
As far as the story goes, we do know that Mike Mignola, the original creator/writer of the Hellboy comics, is developing the game's story. The setting takes place in The Butterfly House, which is described as “more than a mere residence; it’s a gateway. Its perverse angles and non-Euclidean geometries were designed with a singular foul purpose in mind: to open doorways into a terrible and fascinating dimension called The Wyrd.” according to the Steam description.
Our plot, however, takes a spin when an agent of the B.P.R.D. is sent on a mission to The Butterfly House, and doesn't return. At that point, it's up to you, Hellboy, to find your missing colleague and uncover the secrets that lie within The Butterfly House.
“During the investigation, you will explore wondrous and strange planes of existence contained within The Wyrd, each one home to powerful monsters, forgotten godforms, magnificent treasures, and powerful secrets. But be warned, because ancient evil stagnates within the furthest reaches of The Wyrd… evil that is eager to be let out.” say's the Steam description.
