Nine Dots Publishing and Ever Curious have formally announced Witherbloom, a post-apocalyptic survival game that will reportedly transport players to the root of a desolate world—a deprived planet that’s been abandoned by its gods and left to rot in a seemingly endless cycle of mass destruction and chaos. It’s within this world, apparently, that players will need to suit up as one of several classes, and carve deep into a host of deadly dungeons—tainted holes that supposedly contain “twisted aberrations” and the rarities needed to survive and prosper out on the surface.

It hasn’t received a formal release date just yet, but from the looks of the details that we’ve caught so far, Witherbloom will be targeting a rough 2025 launch window. Until that time does arrive, however, here’s everything you should know about it.

What Is Witherbloom?

Witherbloom is an upcoming post-apocalyptic survival hybrid game that will reportedly tout a traditional dungeon crawling experience and a wide array of classes, gear, and loot to accrue and personalize. In the game, players will need to plunge deep into the caverns of a godless world—a mere husk of a society in which the last-remaining resources are scarce, and the tools needed to survive up above idle in the darkest depths of the dungeons down below. It’ll be your role, as one of the fledgling operatives, to brave the opaque landscape and pluck its crags and crevices clean of all their natural materials.

According to Ever Curious, “Witherbloom offers a beautiful and vibrant world unlike anything you have seen before. Its hand-crafted levels, creatures, and items are inspired by frightening – and hopeful – psychological phenomenon. The deeper you delve, the more rewards, challenges, and mysteries you will uncover.”

Story

Witherbloom casts its shadow over a god-deprived civilization that’s on the brink of collapse due to a scarcity of readily accessible resources and a looming threat that rumbles from beneath the surface. In a world without gods—beings that once existed for the sake of providing earthlings with the means to survive and prosper—those who remain must forage for a new purpose, and one that will help usher in a new generation of survivors.

“The world has been shattered, and its up to you to rebuild something meaningful… if you can survive,” the blurb reads in part. “Enter the twisted realms of Ingenuity, Harmony, and Passion – the abandoned domains of absent gods. Gather loot, resources, survivors, and answers. But weigh your choices and decide when to retreat with your spoils. If you delve too deep for too long… death and worse will find you.”

Gameplay

There haven’t been a lot of gameplay snippets just yet, so we can’t really comment on the specifics, sadly. With that said, we do know that the game will feature “16 distinct dual-class combinations – including the Overseer, Ritualist, Guerrilla, and Predator – each with their own unique skill trees and utilities.” What’s more, the devs claim that you’ll also be able to “forge relationships and make hard choices about whom and what you will invest in. Improve your Hub, equipment, what you can craft, and what the characters in your Hub can do – all while you level up your own abilities across each run.”

“Plunder what you can while using your unique combat abilities to overcome the twisted aberrations that haunt these mysterious places; delve deeper using your survival abilities to succeed against the elements, hunger, injury, exhaustion, and the mysterious Withering,” the game’s description adds. “Brave the dangers of Witherbloom alone, or experience its unique take on multiplayer-survival with up to four friends. Coordinate your survival and combat skills to overcome the dangers of the world as you forge your community.”

Development

Witherbloom is being headed up by Ever Curious, an independent studio that was formed back in 2021 by numerous industry veterans, a few of whom were once involved in projects conceived by the likes of Microsoft, Crytek, and Relic. Going by the studio’s portfolio, Witherbloom will serve as its first major IP.

“We believe that a small team of discipline experts, with an intentional and player-centric approach, can reliably and efficiently create games that audiences will clamour for,” the developer writes. “Our games feature deeply systemic gameplay, interwoven with imaginative worlds and narratives, all tied together by provocative themes. We use our curiosity to fuel curiosity in our players.”

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Witherbloom doesn’t have a concrete release date just yet, but according to the folks over at Ever Curious, the game will be shaping up for a soft launch on a multitude of consoles, as well as PC via Steam. With that, an Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version seems likely, although we won’t be able to say for certain until either Ever Curious or Nine Dots Publishing decides to touch base on the matter in a future update.

As far as launch editions go, neither of the two firms have commented on anything outside of the standard version for consoles and PC. If something of the special sort does come to pass over the next several months, though, then then the announcement is likely to arrive on Ever Curious’ social or Discord feed. You can join the official Discord server for a slew of additional updates here.
