Warm Snow: Everything We Know

What is Warm Snow, you ask? It’s snow that refuses to melt! But what really is Warm Snow? Well, it’s an upcoming rogue-lite game currently in development by Microids in collaboration with Bilibili Games. While the game originally launched on Steam in January 2022, you’ll be happy to know that it’s now coming to consoles sometime soon. So, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch owners will in no time be able to dip their feet into the dark fantasy oriental universe of Warm Snow.

What is Warm Snow?

Warm Snow is an upcoming rogue-lite game currently in development by Microids in collaboration with Bilibili Games. It’s set in a dark fantasy Oriental universe. Players will take on an impossible mission against the Five Great Clans. They will navigate a world on the brink of destruction. However, their tenacious will and strength against the forces of evil will pay off handsomely in the end.

Story

Warm Snow takes place in a dark fantasy world. After a mysterious “warm snow” falls from the sky, it turns people into monsters. The world quickly succumbs to chaos and is on the verge of destruction. It’s up to you, a warrior called Bi-An, to uncover the mystery behind the warm snow, fight against the Five Great Clans, and restore order to the world. 

Here’s the official description of the story via Steam:

A strange phenomenon appeared during the 27th Year of the Longwu Era. Snow fell from the sky, which was warm rather than cold to the touch, and did not melt.

People who breathed in the ‘Warm Snow' lost their minds and became monsters. This phenomenon was later known as ‘Warm Snow'.

Embark on a journey as Warrior ‘Bi-an' to search for the truth behind the ‘Warm Snow' and put an end to this never-ending darkness.

Gameplay

Warm Snow’s gameplay revolves around flying swords and engaging in epic battles. As Bi-An, your task is to fight against the Five Great Clans and restore order to the world. You’ll also need to uncover the mysteries behind the warm snow and free the people from its curse.

Development

Warm Snow was originally released on PC via Steam in January 2022. Later, the game launched on iOS and Android in December 2022 in China. It received mostly positive reviews, with a 9/10 rating on Steam. While developer BadMudStudio worked on the initial release, developer Microids is taking charge of working on the upcoming game. The two are more or less the same game. However, the second release will be coming to consoles, including current and next-gen ones.

Warm Snow looks and plays a lot like Hades. And while it may not match Supergiant Games’ Hades flashy style, it still has its own unique flair, thanks to drawing inspiration from silk paintings and Chinese folklore. These give Warm Snow its unique, innate identity, which is perhaps the reason for its huge success.

According to Microids, Warm Snow has garnered a “very positive” rating from over 25,000 gamers on Steam since its launch in January 2022. The game went on to receive three awards, namely the Jincha Award for the most anticipated game of 2022, the 2020 Indieplay Nova Prize, and the Bilibili 2022 Must-Play. Additionally, the game’s studio has sold over 2 million copies on PC and mobile as of May 2023. 

It’s no secret whether Warm Snow is critically acclaimed and commercially successful. And with the upcoming launch across all remaining platforms, next and current-gen consoles included, Warm Snow is shaping up to garner even more success after tapping into a wider reach.

Trailer

Microids has released an announcement trailer. It shows snippets of the dark fantasy world inspired by Chinese folklore. We see the flying swords and skill tree gameplay system we can expect in the final game. There are even snippets of some boss fights, too.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

While Warm Snow was initially released in January 2022 on PC via Steam and later in December 2022 on mobile in China, the game is preparing for a re-release on consoles. According to Microids, the game will be digitally available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows Store on October 20, 2023.
