Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance

Water. Earth. Fire. Air… Sounds familiar? I could recite the words in my sleep and probably imagine the four nations doing their thing. I love the Avatar series that much, and The Last Airbender even more. So, when news came of a new upcoming game set to release sometime soon, I was on cloud nine. If you’re also a fan of the Avatar series, you’re in luck. A new game called Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance plans to launch as early as Autumn 2023. Unlike previous games in the Avatar video game series, this new entry will be an original one.

Before it arrives, you’re probably wondering whether it’s worth the purchase. One way to answer that is to know how the story, gameplay, combat, and the like match your expectations. So, sit tight as we uncover Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance — Everything We Know.

What is Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance?

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance is an upcoming action-adventure game. It draws inspiration from the cult classic animated series: Avatar: The Last Airbender. So, you can expect to relive the series in some familiar and novel ways.

The new game is a part of the Avatar series, which had taken a hiatus of nine years since its last 2014 entry: The Legend of Kora. Now, it seems the series is gearing up for a long-overdue reboot, which is about time to relive Aang’s journey in a brand new way.

Story

We don’t have the exact details of the storyline. However, from the game’s synopsis, we can flesh out an overall idea of the direction the story will likely take. At the center of it all is Aang, who can control all four elements, joined by his friends Zuko, Sokka, Katara, and Toph, who’ll help him restore balance to Earth.

Players will need to master all four elements to explore the world around them as well as solve environmental puzzles. All while experiencing “the most heart touching moments of Aang’s story.”

In the trailer’s description, it says Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance will feature an “epic adventure of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender Series,” which is unlike what the previous games have done. So, perhaps we’ll go back in time and relive the original story with updates in the graphics to fit modern times? Let’s wait and see.

Gameplay

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance

There are three modes players can choose from: solo campaign, two-player local, or online co-op. You can also control up to nine different Avatar: The Last Airbender characters, including fan favorites Aang, Zuko, Toph, Katara, and Sokka.

The world will feature unique locations from the series. It’ll also have environmental puzzles, that require mastery of the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. So, each puzzle will ideally require you to use one or more of the elements to solve it.

While the main mission is described roughly as “Aaang and his friends restoring balance to the world,” there will be side quests you can venture into to keep busy. There will be character upgrades, too, perhaps unlocking a new element as you progress further into the game.

Besides the nine playable characters, there are other interesting NPCs you’ll run into on your adventures. Some will be iconic characters from the series. In total, players will go through 18 captivating chapters, which you’re free to replay in case you feel you’ve rushed through either one.

Development

An Amazon leak first revealed the possibility of a new Avatar game called “Quest for Balance.” It was leaked via the Amazon Japanese website as a listing. This was back in 2022, when the description stated the game would release on November 8, 2022. Further, the leak suggested the game’s publisher would be GameMill Entertainment. As well as the platforms the game will launch on as PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. However, beyond that, details on the gameplay, story, and combat were pure speculation.

Afterwards, the game appeared on GameFly, with many rumors hinting at a November 2022 launch window. We’re way past that, obviously. However, IGN reports that publisher GameMill Entertainment and developer Bamtag Games have finally confirmed that Avatar: The Last Airbender — Quest for Balance will make its way to all major platforms in Fall 2023.

While we don’t have a specific release date just yet, we do have high hopes that the new announcement is legit. Fingers crossed the new launch window sticks this time because the wait for a new Avatar entry has already been long enough.

A recently released trailer on the PlayStation YouTube page reveals snippets of what we can expect from the new game. It starts with naming the four elements for each of the four nations. Then, it shows the famous Aang and Appa duo joyously riding through the air. You can see some of the puzzles players will solve. Each one infuses either of the four elements in some way. It displays a glimpse of the mysteries players will unlock. Gradually building up to Aang’s main mission to restore balance to the world. Check out the trailer here.
