Twisted Tower: Everything We Know

Just when we thought we had seen it all, 3D Realms and Atmos Games only went and announced Twisted Tower, a “Willy Wonka meets BioShock” first-person shooter for PC. Turns out, this oddly violent Wonka-themed creation won’t be handing out golden tickets, as such, but more invitations to an unruly and evidently barbaric game show—a feature that you, the lucky recipient of said invitation, will have the chance to be the star in. Lucky you.

So, what more do you need to know about Twisted Tower ahead of its global launch? Well, here’s everything we’ve been able to collect on the game since first catching wind of its existence a little earlier this month. Ready to chow down on some ̶c̶h̶o̶c̶o̶l̶a̶t̶e̶ blood and bone? Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming first-person shooter.

What Is Twisted Tower?

Twisted Tower is a first-person shooter set in the 1920s. Its premise, which has all the elements of a traditional game show, revolves around one player’s gradual ascension through a sky-high tower—a locale in which “horrifying” enemies roam the floors and death-defying obstacles impede your quest for victory. As said player—an unfortunate teenage soul who’s been given a Velvet Ticket to join the show—you will need to enter the ever-changing world and fight not only for your own life, but for “the love of your life” who idles on the highest tier of the Tower.

An excerpt from 3D Realms’ elevator pitch: “BioShock meets Willy Wonka. Climb the ever-changing 1920s Twisted Tower game show! Every twisting floor has a variety of paths to choose, horrifying enemies to slaughter, and clues about your dark past. Can you get to the top and win the heart of the love of your life?”

“Step right up into the Twisted Tower, the world’s bloodiest game show!” the description continues. “Are you lucky enough to ascend the treacherous floors, confront the tower demons, and reach the top?” Color us intrigued.

Story

From the looks of the pitch that was supplied by 3D Realms earlier this week, Twisted Tower will be as much of a love story as a brutally violent game show-centric bloodbath. According to the description, the story will revolve around a teenage boy—a young and relatively heartsick soul with an undying desire to claim the heart of “the love of his life”, who also happens to be the grand prize at the apex of the Twisted Tower. With said love watching over his every move, the fledgling fighter will need to sift through the floors and not only earn the heart of his childhood sweetheart, but the millions of fans that tune in to the game show on a frequent basis. No pressure there, then.

Aside from the general quest for love, it seems that there’ll also be another web of nodes to unravel, too—a historical one, of sorts, that will connect to the boy’s “dark and twisted past.” As for what these nodes will involve is still a complete mystery, though. Either way, it appears that there’ll be plenty of gore and lore to tuck into.

Gameplay

It’s a first-person shooter at heart, so you can definitely expect to soak up your fair share of violent feuds and high-octane boss battles. Plus, as it’s a game show with an emphasis on combat, you can also expect to unravel an enormous amount of weapons and tools with the cash you accrue from the victims and monsters you slaughter. It’s evidently 3D Realms, is what we’re saying — so you can take that at face value, basically.

As for the Twisted Tower itself, it seems that each floor will contain several routes, which will allow the player to mix up their journeys with each new session. It’ll also be “ever-changing”, too — so you can expect to return to a whole bunch of areas and often find something new stashed away on each and every floor. How’s that for replay value?

“Avoid deadly traps, locked doors, frightening enemies inspired by children’s shows, all at the command of a mysterious toy maker, Mr. Twister,” the description adds. “Explore a puzzling tower inspired by Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory & Bioshock.” That’s quite the combination, to be fair, and one that, in all honesty, we can’t wait to sample when it finally finds the light of day on PC at some point in the not-so distant future.

Development

In case you missed the initial announcement, Twisted Tower is being developed by Atmos Games, an independent studio that’s responsible for both Pinstripe and Neversong. It’s forthcoming IP—the bloodied and bruised shooter we now know as Twisted Tower—will be arriving on PC via Steam. As for whether or not it’ll latch onto Xbox and PlayStation is unclear, though for what it’s worth, we honestly hope that it finds its way to external platforms in the months following its PC debut. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Twisted Tower — Announcement Trailer

The good news is, the devs have already gone as far as to tease a pre-launch trailer over on its chosen streaming handles. Interested? You can catch a glimpse of what’s to come in the latest FPS in the latest preview embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

As it stands, 3D Realms has yet to staple a release date to the IP. That said, the devs have gone as far as to say that it’ll be heading to PC via Steam. With a little luck, we should see a bit more of it before year’s end, and hopefully, if all goes according to plan, a global launch at some point in 2024.
