Tokyo Revengers: Everything We Know

Victor Entertainment has lifted the veil on an all-new video game adaptation of one of Japan’s most popular manga and anime series, Tokyo Revengers. Due out later this year, the universally acclaimed anime will finally port its way over to smartphones, consoles and PC, and with an exciting new 3D action-RPG style, no less. What’s more, it’ll reportedly launch as a free-to-play game, which means *sigh* there will be in-game transactions in one form or another.

Whatever your stance on in-game fees and what have you is, Victor Entertainment will be bringing the adaptation of Tokyo Revengers out in 2023 regardless. But before you register your interest and add it to your diary, here’s everything else you should know about it. Tokyo Revengers: what is it, really, and how will it pay respects to one of Japan’s most successful TV and manga franchises to date?

What Is Tokyo Revengers?

So, what on earth is the Tokyo Revengers game, and how will it differ from the anime that made it the local powerhouse that it is today? Well, according to the devs, we’ll need to “pay attention to the high-quality reproduction of the streets of Shibuya and the 3D characters that have been faithfully reproduced in a re-experience-type game.” What they mean is, the forthcoming adaptation will be based on the same series of events as depicted in the manga and anime TV series. “In addition, the main story that follows the original work and the voices by gorgeous voice actors who bring the characters to life are a must-listen.” That’s quite the boast, by any measure.

Just to clue you in on the whole ordeal, Tokyo Revengers will be launching exclusively in Japan, so before you delve any deeper into the facts, just know that it could be a while before we see it shifted over to a wider audience. If that isn’t an issue, however, then here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming RPG.

Story

In case you missed the memo, Tokyo Revengers bases its premise around Takemichi Hanagaki, a twenty-something year old who, upon death, receives the gift of being sent back exactly twelve years—to a time period in which his deepest love interest succumbs to a tragic death. With the power of foresight, the protagonist sets out to change the future, as well as alter the course of the past in one fell swoop.

The good news is, the video game adaptation will feature a story that follows the source to the letter. So, if you’ve managed to brush up on the countless volumes that have been releasing for the best part of six or seven years, then you’ll no doubt already have a pretty solid idea of what to expect come launch day.

Gameplay

Tokyo Revengers is a free-to-play action RPG. And on that note, as with anything that’s essentially free in this day and age, there will be one or two in-game microtransactions to sift through. As for how much of an impact these transactions will make on the overall quality and experience of the story is still unclear. Needless to say that, being an action RPG, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to brawl, explore, and interact with some of the series’ most iconic characters.

Aside from the basics, details are pretty scarce as far as gameplay goes. Here’s hoping, then, that we’ll see a little more footage come to light in the months leading up to its eventual release.

Development

It’s being built by Victor Entertainment, one of the leading subsidiaries of JVCKenwood Corporation. Knowing this, and how the multimedia firm has heaps of experience in the world of anime and other forms of entertainment, we’re not exactly concerned over which direction the forthcoming adaptation will head towards. That is, of course, providing the game sticks to the same material as its highly acclaimed source.

Victor Entertainment announced its plans to bring Tokyo Revengers to mobile and other platforms back in the beginning of June 2023. Since then, not a great deal has come to pass, other than a rather short and cryptic trailer. Going by that, fans of the franchise can expect to see the action RPG hit the shelves at some point later this year.

If you had high hopes of seeing a feature-length trailer with plenty of gameplay elements and character reveals, you’re in for a bit of a surprise. Although there is a sneak preview of Tokyo Revengers, it doesn’t give a huge deal away, nor does it paint much of a picture of what the gameplay will even look like. Even still, you can catch a minor glimpse of what’s to come in the upcoming adaptation in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Victor Entertainment will be bringing Tokyo Revengers to mobile in “winter 2023”, followed by PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC port. Just to echo the fact that these versions will be locked to a Japanese audience, so don’t expect to see it appear on the front page of any alternate version of the PlayStation Store or Nintendo eShop on launch, basically. As for when it’ll reach the faraway shores is still unclear. If it gains a lot of traction on release, though, then chances are it’ll spread its wings a little wider before the end of 2024. Either way, I wouldn’t get your hopes up just yet.

As it’s still early days, Victor Entertainment hasn’t quite managed to get around to announcing any special editions or pre-order material yet. Mind you, that isn’t to say there will be anything of the sort, what with the game being free-to-play and what have you. Whatever the case, we’ll be keeping an eye out just on the off chance that there is something in the cards.
