Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2: Everything We Know

Published

 on

Gearbox Software is at it again, which means fans of both Borderlands and its D&D-inspired spin-off, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, can expect to see yet another wave of bombastic tongue-in-cheek shenanigans and, if we’re lucky, another glimpse of the candy-coated Queen Butt Stallion. That’s right — the pyromaniac is rocking the apple cart in Bunkers & Badasses yet again, and if what we’ve heard turns out to be true, then we should expect to see the likes of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 grace the market relatively soon. Huzzah!

Of course, Gearbox slyly making moves to bring ‘ol Tina back to the forefront of the franchise is one thing — but when are we likely to see it all come to fruition? Well, if you are the slightest bit interested in the future of Pandora’s favorite loud-mouthed bombshell, then be sure to read on. Here’s everything you need to know about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2.

What Is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2?

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter and strategy role-playing game by Gearbox Software, as well as the sequel to 2013’s Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, and 2022’s Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. As it stands, we don’t actually know whether or not the upcoming installment will serve as a continuation, or stand on its own two feet as a cherry-faced standalone episode. Whatever the case, one thing seems evidently clear: the sequel is happening, and it’s being developed in tandem with Borderlands 4. How’s that for a fresh slice of Pandora for you?

Story

Given the unpredictability of it all, it wouldn’t surprise us if Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 was to pursue an entirely different route, and thus abandon the world and its inhabitants that made the cut back in 2022. Does this mean no more Queen Butt Stallion? The jury’s currently out on that one. However, as this is indeed Gearbox Software we’re talking about—a studio that’s virtually known for producing some rather unruly concepts—it’s highly likely that the “sequel” will be less of a sequel, and more of a standalone expedition through an entirely different series of events.

In case you missed out on the first game in the series, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands ended with Tiny Tina herself overruling the ever-popular Bunkers & Badasses—a D&D-type board game with a looter shooter twist—and banishing the Dragon Lord, a character who sought to gain control over the game and spawn infinite waves of chaos and destruction. Well, that ended with the Dragon Lord serving hard time as Queen Butt Stallion’s steward, which of course opened up the question: will the Dragon Lord break free from the shackles and wreak havoc again? With any luck, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 will provide us with an answer to that exact question.

Gameplay

We have every reason to believe that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 will be in receipt of the same blueprint as the first. If we’re on the money with this, then fans can expect a mixture of classic looter shooter gameplay—a first-person style that Gearbox has proudly finessed since the launch of Borderlands back in 2009—and top-down strategy role-playing, similar to what the likes of Dungeons & Dragons employs.

If the first game in the series is anything to go by, then we can certainly expect to see a myriad of semi-open world environments and corresponding quest lines, along with an “Overworld”—a separate universe that displays vast amounts of prominent landmarks and additional quests, areas, and characters. Sure enough, the core mechanics of a traditional Borderlands game will be there — but with a few more, shall we say, strategic elements.

Development

At the time of writing, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 hasn’t been announced. Having said that, we have received intel from various sources, namely a former Gearbox Software employee who, rather surprisingly, posted an update via LinkedIn stating that they were working on two new projects: Borderlands 4and of course, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2. For this reason alone, we know for certain that there’s a sequel in the pipeline. The question is, when will it arrive, and will it be before, or after Borderlands 4? Either way, there’s clearly a lot on Gearbox Software’s plate — so expect to catch plenty more of Pandora and its gun-toting inhabitants in the coming years, basically.

Trailer

Gearbox Software has yet to lift the veil on any form of gameplay footage, or even any in-game screenshots, for that matter. Not that this comes as much of a surprise, mind you, what with the game “technically” being something of a shadow dweller at the time of writing. If, however, something of the sort does decide to pop up, then there’s a good chance that it’ll debut during The Game Awards on December 7, 2023.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

It’s fair to say that, when it boils down to Borderlands 4 and the sequel to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Gearbox Software is bound to release the former first, and with any luck, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 shortly thereafter. It’s hard to say at this point, though given the fact that Borderlands 4 has been in active development for several years, whereas Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has only been on the market since early 2022, we have every reason to believe that Wonderlands 2 is still several years from hitting the shelves. Again, we’re mostly speculating at this time, but if we had to chalk up a rough guesstimate, then we’d probably have to favor an early-to-mid 2025 launch.

As far as platforms go, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 will most likely follow in the same footsteps as its predecessor, which means we can expect to see it launching across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Does this mean it won’t debut on Xbox One or PlayStation 4? Who knows. Either way, we can definitely anticipate a release on modern hardware.
