The God Slayer

Good news, RPG fans, a new title from Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai will launch on PlayStation 5. The bad news is that you'll have to wait four years before it drops. The God Slayer is an upcoming title that is still in its early stages of development, but the developers have been gracious enough to hint at its production.

It's not uncommon for developers to unveil a game in the works. However, announcing a game almost half a decade early is quite rare. Could this be the groundbreaking marvel that stands as a benevolent architect? Only time will tell. In the meantime, let's unpack what is in the headlines in The God Slayer: Everything We Know.

What is the Godslayer?

The God Slayer

The God Slayer is an upcoming action RPG title by Pathea Games. You may know them from My Time at Portia. The game is a post-apocalyptic building game where you compete to be the best builder. Despite its premise sounding simple, its gameplay is a boatload of fun, earning “mixed or average” reviews from aggregator Metacritic.

The developer is currently working on a sequel, My Time at Sandrock. This could explain the later release of The God Slayer, granted that the developer's hands are full at this time.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai. “The God Slayer is an open-world action RPG featuring a highly immersive gameplay system and story experience, allowing players to enhance their abilities through battles and world exploration with the ultimate goal of defeating enemies and saving the world.”

Story

Going by the premise of other games bearing the word “slayer” in their title, it's safe to assume players might be assuming the role of a hunter. The game's overall aesthetics lean toward a mythical tale rooted in Chinese folklore. The characters appear to be from the Tang Dynasty era, with an infusion of Steampunk themes.

The game’s storyline teases unreachable treasures that we can't wait to behold. But Pathea Games is yet to give details of the game's story. Official released photos of the title reveal a character battling a fierce traditional Chinese-themed dragon. The character is summoning fire from his hands, which hints at the potential use of mystical powers to overcome foes.

The game is clearly a stark departure from what the indie studio developer Pathea Games has released before.

Gameplay

From the horse's mouth, “The God Slayer is an open-world action RPG featuring a highly immersive gameplay system and story experience, allowing players to enhance their abilities through battles and world exploration with the ultimate goal of defeating enemies and saving the world.”

There's a heavy hint of combat being the core of The God Slayer's gameplay. (Let's not forget the word “slayer' in the title). From one character summoning a cloud of fire against a dragon to opponents donning Chinese armor wielding swords. In one of the pictures, we see the presumed antagonist crouching through a dense forest, pointing to stealth as one of the gameplay mechanics.

Development

The God Slayer

The game, as stated, is a brainchild of Panthea Games in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The latter announced the game as part of the PlayStation China Hero Project. For those not familiar with the term, the project is a program by Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai. It offers support to Chinese developers to seamlessly penetrate the Chinese and global markets.

It's certainly challenging to captivate gamers across various continents. This collaboration makes it easier for entrants to unleash mind-blowing, high-quality games that speak to every gamer's desire. Chinese developers benefit from the resources, marketing help, and guidance from the program, allowing them to access a wider market.

The project is now in its 3rd phase, and through a tweet from China Hero Project, this upcoming title is one of the games under the program. Other games are TI Games' The Wind Rising and Daba: Land of the Water Scar by Dark Star.

Furthermore, since PlayStation is part of the game's development, we could be in for some pretty immersive action that leverages the PS5's hardware.

Trailer

Unfortunately, Panthea Games is yet to release an official trailer for The God Slayer. The only thing we have going for this game are stills from the game. But don't let this discourage you. The screenshots are quite impressive for what the developers are aiming at. We'll be sure to share the game's official announcement trailer once it drops.

Release Date, Platforms, and Editions

the God Slayer

As far as release dates go, we'll have to exercise patience with this one. According to the developers, the earliest release date is 2027.

Granted the history of game releases, we've witnessed games receiving a release date which is then pushed further. That said, we will only include this game in our wishlist once we get more details of its progress. Notwithstanding, from its first glance, it's shaping up to be an enthralling action RPG that could see other titles such as Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, and Dark Souls a run for their money.

Moreover, since this game is under the China Hero Project, you can expect to see it first exclusively on PlayStation 5. And while we can't certainly say whether the game will be ported to ex-gen consoles or PC, the developer and Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai have yet to shed light on this.

Since the game is still in its early stages of development, there's not much we can say about it. However, Pathea Games' new release, My Time at Sandrock, is now available as early access. Therefore, you can get acquainted with the developer's grand work before we finally get to lay our hands on The God Slayer.

We'll be sure to rope you in on new details about the game as soon as they hit the headlines right here on gaming.net. You can also keep tabs on the game's progress via the developer's official social handle here.
