Grand Theft Auto 6 Everything we know

It’s been all crickets and dead-drop silence since the leaks and rumors about the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 broke the internet a while ago. Fans just can’t wait to get their hands on the sequel to the showstopping GTA 5 entry. And, now, from the looks of the first-ever officially released GTA 6 trailer, we may be seeing GTA 6 arrive sometime sooner than you think.

It’s been a grueling 13 years since GTA 5 hit stores. Since then, we’ve been clutching at our seats, wondering when we might ever get a sneak peek into Rockstar Games’ next foray. In February 2022, Rockstar Games confirmed “the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.” Thereafter, leaked footage gave us hints about one of the maps and likely the main character for GTA 6

Now that the trailer is out, are the leaks and rumors we’ve been relying on, in fact, true? Has Rockstar Games finally confirmed an actual release date? What about the story and gameplay? Come with us as we explore everything we know so far about Grand Theft Auto 6.

What is Grand Theft Auto 6?

Hardly short of leaks and rumors, the release of the official Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer finally puts to rest any doubts about an upcoming sequel. Prepare for the return of the dearly beloved Grand Theft Auto series, an action-adventure open-world game cruising around crime-ridden fictional cities.

GTA is no stranger to gaming, having sold over 190 million copies. Its latest entry, GTA 5, was a massive commercial success. It makes you all the more excited to witness just how vigorously GTA 6 intends to rock the gaming boat.

Story

As the leaks and rumors so generously pointed out, Grand Theft Auto 6 will, in fact, take us back to Vice City, a fictional map of Miami. Sure enough, a lot has changed since the days of cruising around Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on PS2 in 2002 and the prequel’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories in 2006.

What’s more? These were set in the mid-1980s. But Rockstar plans to adapt it into a modern-day version. You can already see it looking lavishly beautiful in the trailer, with familiar hot spots like Starfish Island. No doubt, overwhelming excitement is running high at the thought of exploring the state of Leonida on modern-age consoles.

Furthermore, we can confirm that the Bonnie and Clyde-inspired storyline rumors are true. GTA 6 will follow two lead protagonists—a male and a female called Jason and Lucia. For the first time ever, GTA 6 will feature a female playable protagonist in the main story mode. Exciting stuff, for sure.

Gameplay

As always, GTA 6 will spawn players in a massive open-world city. It’ll follow twin protagonists, Lucia and Jason. In the trailer, Lucia seems to be wearing prison clothes. So, perhaps she’s on the run. She’s also closely bonded to Jason, with whom they’ll presumably be orchestrating heists together. Hopefully, we’ll see more concrete details in a future gameplay trailer.

Development

JASON AND LUCIA Grand Theft Auto 6

Apparently, the development of GTA 6 has been in play since 2014. However, the official confirmation came much later, in February 2022, via a GTA 5 Community Update. It’s the most subtle way Rockstar could have broken the news, given the many years fans have had to rely on speculation and leaks about whether GTA 6 is ever coming.

In a section called “What’s Next,” Rockstar stated that the next entry in the franchise is “well underway.” Then, proceeded to seal tight any further details. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, reiterated the same thing in a financial results report in September 2022, stating:

With the development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series well underway, the Rockstar Games team is determined to once again set creative benchmarks for the series, our industry, and for all entertainment.”

The words “well underway” kept coming up, and not much else. Well, at least until the official launch of the first-ever GTA 6 trailer. As promised, Rockstar Games’ reassurance to fans that “We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details” has paid off. So, definitely watch this space for new updates on developments as they come in.

The man of the hour—without it, we’d still be chasing our tails for any hope of GTA 6 news and updates. As of now, you can finally check out the official GTA 6 trailer. Funny enough, it had been scheduled to be released on December 5, 2023. However, Rockstar Games went ahead and posted the trailer a day early after yet another leak.

Oh well, at least you can now check out the concrete details on what to expect, which, I might add, are a whopping sum. From the reveal of dual protagonists to snippets of low-level crime, chaos, street races, robberies, and so much more, the trailer far outdoes itself, and fittingly so.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

NIGHT CLUB IN VICE CITY Grand Theft Auto 6

It’s official, finally! Grand Theft Auto 6 is launching in 2025. Now, “2025” only provides us with a release window. But it’s better than nothing. Plus, what’s two more years, possibly more, of waiting? We suspect the release window may slip further. Rockstar Games hasn’t exactly built a reputation for sticking to timelines. Either way, at least we now have a release window to look forward to.

As for platforms, publisher Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S. While they haven’t confirmed whether the game will come to PC and Switch, possibly the Nintendo Switch successor, we can’t rule them out yet. Previous Rockstar Games have paved their way to these platforms. So, who knows? Maybe they’ll launch on these platforms a little later.

What remains unclear are the editions you can expect to pre-order. Granted, it’s still too early for that, but there are high chances that premium and collector’s editions will be made available.

With a couple of details still unclear, you can always follow Rockstar’s official Twitter handle here or check back in with us to keep track of any new updates.
