Project Mist: Everything We Know

Developer Chicken Launcher and publisher Awaken Realms have announced Project Mist, an all-new open world survival-horror game for PC. If all goes according to plan, then we should have a clearer idea of what this newly formed IP will at least look like over the next several months. Until then, just know this: the studio behind Fresh Start and No Place Like Home is about to take its first steps into deeper, darker waters, and thus lose sight of its family-friendly roots along the way.

So, what more do you need to know about the upcoming venture? Well, if you are interested in seeing what’s to come of Chicken Launcher’s latest project, then be sure to read on. Here’s everything we currently know about Project Mist.

What Is Project Mist?

To give you an idea of what it’s all about, Project Mist is an upcoming open world survival-horror game—a love letter to the genre’s greats, if you will, and one that’ll promote infinite freedom and creative control. True to its word, the game won’t offer any form of hand-holding, and will therefore push its players to navigate, study, and adapt to a “harsh environment” off their own backs and without any guidance. Sound like your ideal cup of tea? If so, then read on.

In Chicken Launcher’s own words: “Join the Project Mist in this new open world survival horror. Explore an enigmatic Island. Fight against colossal monsters. Build and defend your base while crafting traps, siege weapons, upgrading your gear and Gravity Gun. Survive or perish while unraveling the secrets behind the giant wall!”

Story

In case you missed it, the story will revolve around a Great Wall—an oversized structure that seemingly resembles the remains of an old and decrepit world. As a survivor on the enigmatic island, you must embark on a quest to unravel the mysteries encased within the wall, as well as learn to survive the unforgiving elements and the relentless trials that each day brings. There’ll be enormous foes to tackle, encampments to scavenge, and enough crafting to see that little tent of yours blossom into a full-fledged communal hub.

At the time of writing, there’s still a great deal we don’t know about the wall in question, let alone what the future of the world will entail. For what it’s worth, though, we do know this: you won’t be alone, and you will, unfortunately, be one of the unfortunate souls who finds themselves sitting at the bottom of the food chain.

Gameplay

Chicken Launcher has described the game as being a survival-horror, which means we can definitely expect to see our fair share of exploration, crafting, and combat. It also states that it won’t feature any form of guidance, which means newcomers will need to learn how to keep their wits about themselves right from the get-go if they’re planning on surviving the horrors that loom in the darkness.

“In this unforgiving nightmare, every decision can be a matter of life or death,” reads the elevator pitch. “Your resourcefulness, cunning, and determination are your only allies against the unrelenting terror. Farm, cook, craft special consumables, weapons of war and ammunition.”

“Your base is your lifeline in this merciless world,” the description continues. “Build, fortify, and defend it against relentless threats. Craft traps, siege weapons, power mines, energy turrets and a whole array of arsenal to give yourself the upper hand in the fight for survival.”

Development

It’s definitely a first for Chicken Launcher, that’s for sure. And in case you’ve yet to brush up on your knowledge of the studio’s former works, then just know this: survival-horror isn’t one of its chosen subjects. On the contrary, the team has been known for its contributions in the farming and cutesy life simulation sphere — so Project Mist is certainly a step in a new direction for the developer.

According to the devs, Project Mist will be finding its way over to Steam at some point in the (hopefully) not-so future. And while we can’t say for certain when that is likely to be, we can say that, as far as teaser footage goes, the project appears to be working towards a 2024 launch. But don’t take our word on that, though.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Project Mist will be launching on PC via Steam at some point in the foreseeable future. Does this mean it won’t be on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch? As it stands, no. Having said that, it’s still early days, so while the likelihood of it arriving on consoles may seem low at present, it could be that it finds a port at some point in the not-so distant future.
