Kemono Teatime Promotional Art

Fans of Coffee Talk and other cozy brewing simulators are about to have a whole new line of work introduced to them—an ASMR-centric cafe management game titled Kemono Teatime. That’s right, there’s another stack of coffee fumes to generate, and with that, an entirely new location to plant roots in as an up-and-coming, fledgling, kemonomimi-loving barista. There’ll be cat ears aplenty, no doubt, and not to mention a lo-fi aesthetic that’ll make even the most relaxed ASMR enthusiasts a little giddy with joy.

So, what more do you need to know about the upcoming cafe management sim ahead of its global debut? Will there be a narrative to stitch together, or will it, more or less, be a run-of-the-mill cappuccino-like brewing sim with a few colorful tea leaves, to boot? Here’s everything we can tell you about it based on the information that’s been provided to date.

What Is Kemono Teatime?

NPC conversations in Kemono Teatime

Kemono Teatime is an upcoming cafe management simulation game, and above all, a love letter to ASMR and kemonomimi—a community based on human-like characters with cat ears and, by extension, tails and other feline features. The game, which will grant players passage to a world of vibrant creatures and ingredients, will feature a series of episodic tales—heartwarming and thought-provoking moments, if you will, that players will be able to navigate and tailor to their own tastes.

“Relax in this world where animal ears are a normal part of everyday life,” the game’s description reads in part. “Here in Melodius, you can whip up whatever blends of tea you desire in your favorite cafe as you play through an adorable story. Come now and live out your bestest and cutest life—down to the last drop. Though, you do know that once it’s run out, that’s it, right? It’d do you best to learn that all good things come to an end.”

The description adds: “Meet all the Kemomimis that come through the cafe and help them wind down, spend a cute and adorable time sipping on some tea, and come to terms with their ultimate fates.”

Story

NPC conversations in Kemono Teatime

Going by the elevator pitch that was posted earlier this week, there will be a story — and a timed one, from the sounds of it. By that, it could be that the characters featured in the story won’t be permanent fixtures, but rather, temporary accomplices who share an undying passion for the art of tea making and small talk. It’ll be your job, as the owner of the cafe, to connect with your patrons, and ultimately make their stays at your establishment something to cherish for weeks, months, and maybe even years.

Gameplay

Kemono Teatime will focus its energy on creating an ASMR-like environment—a warm and supposedly fuzzy world that’ll house a variation of friendly faces, secret recipes, and a whole lot of heartwarming dialogue. What’s more, it promises “to deliver cute aesthetic through both visuals and audio”—an audiovisual benchmark that’ll no doubt make fans of the ASMR community proud.

It’ll be a cafe management sim at heart, too, so we can definitely expect to bump into our fair share of issues during the nine-to-five. For the most part, though, it seems that the bulk of the gameplay will revolve around mixing ingredients and brewing various flavors of tea for customers, as well as chiming in every once in a while to unravel their backstories and the fuel that ultimately drives their ambitions.

“Create your own unique teas with our stock of 9 black teas, 15 herbs, and 6 secret ingredients,” the creators boast. “Get to know the customers and make them something that they’ll love while you immerse yourself in the wonderful sounds of the tea-making process.”

Development

From the sounds of the press release, Kemono Teatime will have a strong team to support it; Snail’s House, a firm best known for its synth and anime-style productions, will be the leading faction behind its character and audio design, apparently.

In the words of its founders: “This game is co-produced by Fuyuki Hayashi (Studio Lalala) and voice actress Kotori Koiwai, featuring ASMR from Koiwai’s ASMR brand “kotoneiro,” with NOCO as the main visual/character designer and music provided by Snail’s House, known for their YouTube channel with over 1.3 million subscribers.”

At the time of writing, we don’t know the exact date that it’ll be releasing on PC, though according to its Steam handle, it’ll be launching at some point in 2024. It will also be available in English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

Thanks to Studio Lalala, there is a bit of footage of their upcoming IP already afloat. Interested in catching a glimpse of what’s to come in the brewing sim? You can check out the initial announcement trailer in the video embedded here.

Kemono Teatime will be launching on PC via Steam at some stage in 2024. Does that mean we won’t be seeing an Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch port? It’s hard to say at this point in time, though from the sounds of it, there could be a handheld version in the works. But don’t quote us on that, though.
