Life goes on. People go on dates. They sit around the dinner table and enjoy a heartfelt meal. Perhaps pop some corn and watch a movie till bedtime. But imagine if the end of the world was nigh. I doubt it’ll happen at the same time everywhere. You could be going on with daily life while chaos breaks out in other parts of the world. If you ever wonder what the transition between the norm and absolute madness looks like, Eternights can offer some insight. Sure, it’s a video game, but it still offers an interesting premise you might want to check out. Here’s Eternights: Everything We Know.

What is Eternights?

Eternights

Eternights is an upcoming dating action game from the indie game developer and publisher, Studio Sai. It starts off casually, with the player setting up romantic dates before things turn awry and an apocalypse ensues.

According to Steam:

“Eternights is a unique blend of dating and action where players can explore a post-apocalyptic world filled with danger, love, and adventure.”

It’s definitely an exciting venture to add to the gaming space. Who knew dating and hackNslash could blend to create a dating action game? Hopefully, the actual game delivers on expectations, gracefully breaking down the barriers between the dating and action genres.

Story

Eternights

Eternights plans to tell a love story where players fight to save the world while finding love along the way. The protagonist (you) gets wind of dating apps, thanks to your best friend Chani. So, he goes out on dates with an interesting skew of characters.

There’s Yuna, a kind, reserved girl who doesn’t hesitate to help others. Even though her attempts often end up making things worse. Min, on the other hand, is a sweet, shy girl. She does push through her anxiety and goes for what she wants in the long run. Sia loves Science. She’s smart and tenacious. However, the universe is hell-bent on turning down all her advances, forcing her to hold back on her passion. Five total potential dates, each with unique characteristics. Who will you choose?

Meanwhile, a mysterious infection breaks out and spreads fast all around the world. People get infected and eaten. It’s up to you to scavenge for supplies, explore dungeons, save the world and still go on dates!

To keep track of the story, Eternights will have several fully 2D animated cutscenes. Each cutscene will vary depending on the character you choose to date, which can also encourage replayability.

Overall, Eternights promises an immersive experience with authentic connections between characters. It also sounds pretty enticing, juggling between dating and adrenaline-driven combat.

Gameplay

When a mysterious infection turns people into cannibal monsters, it’s up to you to fight them and restore world order. It gets complicated when you multitask fighting the infected with finding love and, in turn, protecting them from harm.

In Eternights, you’re either playing the hero or getting to know five quirky characters a lot more. Each character has a unique story. Exploring them unlocks special skills and spells that come in handy in battle.

Resources are scarce, too, so you have to scavenge for supplies to survive the apocalypse. At some points, you’ll have no other choice but to explore the treacherous dungeons called the “Wall.” Mysteries and danger lurk in every corner. Traps, puzzles, and dancing minigames will pop up at random. All along, the clock is ticking with a time limit for each gameplay element.

You can always train with your companions to grow stronger. And even bring them with you to battle. Based on their personalities and backstories, they may have motives that work in your favor or against you.

It’s clear from the gameplay’s description that there are a lot of moving parts to be expected in Eternights. All of these will possibly amp the ante for competitive players, resulting in a deeply engaging experience. Or, the gameplay may succumb to the pressure and break. Let’s wait and see.

Development

Indie game developer, Studio Sai, is currently working on Eternights. They have released a trailer showing glimpses of the story and gameplay. As well as a demo available during the BitSummit event in Kyoto, Japan.

On Studio Sai’s website, they claim that:

“Studio Sai develops games about the relationships you can forge inside slightly uncommon worlds.”

It seems Eternights is the first game of the dating action kind with the most recognition. So, there’s definitely a lot of pressure to do a solid job. Also, hopefully, the development will keep up to schedule, and the game will arrive on September 31, 2023, as planned.

Then, a mysterious infection breaks out, infecting people and turning them into cannibal monsters.
