Belmont Stakes Betting in 2024 – Everything You Need to Know

Updated on

If you are into horse racing, then you surely must have at least heard of the Belmont Stakes. For those who might be new in horse racing, the Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest of the Triple Crown horse races, and it has been performed for over a century and a half at this point, first starting all the way back in 1867.

The event is held at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, and the race is popularly called the Test of the Champion. The reason for such a name is the fact that it truly pushes the horses to their limits over a dirt course that is 1.5 miles (12-furlong) long.

Now, one thing to note is that this extra distance does make a difference, and in fact, it also makes betting on the Belmont Stakes a bit trickier than what betting on other similar events has been like. So, if you already have experience with betting on the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes, understand that that will help, but that things will be different with Belmont Stakes.

Another thing that makes Belmont stand out is the fact that there is a possibility of a Triple Crown contender being in the running. If there is a Triple Crown Winner, the Belmont becomes one of the biggest horse racing events of the season, and so betting on it can carry tremendous potential.

But, even if there is no horse qualified to win the top prize in the Thoroughbred racing, the Belmont betting traditionally turns a rather large handle. Now, this month, on June 11th, 2022, gamblers will have the opportunity to bet on the 154th Belmont Stakes, which means that the event is taking place in only a few days from now. With that said, if you want to join those betting on the event, we can tell you exactly what to do.

2022 Belmont Stakes Odds

With the 154th Belmont Stakes only days away, there will be plenty of Belmont Stakes odds across the internet. Some of the best online facebook sites will be all over the event, and as a race day approaches, more and more futures, exotics, combo bets, and alike will emerge on the boards.

The current Belmond Stakes odds are different from one site to the next, and so finding the best ones can be tricky. With that said, we believe that these are currently the best odds that you can rely on:

Mo Donegal | 5-1

We The People | 7-2

Rich Strike | 9-2

Creative Minister | 6-1

Nest | 10-1

Ethereal Road | 12-1

Skippylongstocking | 13-1

Barber Road | 14-1

Golden Glide | 20-1

Kuchar | 33-1

What is the Belmont Stakes?

As mentioned earlier, the Belmont Stakes is known as the last entry of the Triple Crown of American Thoroughbred racing. It typically takes place on the first or second Saturday of June every year, and it only takes place after the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby are concluded.

The first Belmont Stakes race took place in 1867, which makes it the oldest major horse race in the US. Now, speaking of the Triple Crown Winner, there have only been 13 horses in the history of the event to carry this title by winning Belmont after previously winning Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The winner from 1973, known as Secretariat, still owns the course record to date.

It is unlikely that another Secretariat will emerge and set a new record in the race, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still have a great time and win a significant amount through regular betting. In fact, there are excellent sportsbooks that will let you do just that over the next few days, and we can recommend the following four as some of the best ones you can access and use.

Best Sportsbooks for Betting on the Belmont Stakes

1. Bovada

The first on our list is Bovada — a sportsbook that launched in 2011. For the first five years of its existence, the platform was regulated by the Kahnawake Gambling Commission. But, after the Commission changed its policy in 2016, the sportsbook willingly gave up on its license in protest, due to disagreements with the changes.

Bovada is operated by the Mohawk Morris Gaming Group, it features multiple payment methods, expert customer service, and it even has its own casino, in addition to its primary sportsbook service.

2. BetUS

Next, we have BetUS, which is the top-tier sportsbook for North America. The platform has been running since 1994, and it features both a sportsbook section and a casino. BetUS is regulated and it holds the Curacao Gaming Commission’s license. It supports several payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, and multiple cryptocurrencies. It also offers an expert customer service available around the clock.

3. Bet Online

As our third entry, we have Bet Online. This is a comprehensive gambling site with an emphasis on the sportsbook offer, and while the casino section is quite entertaining, the sportsbook section is where you need to go to bet on Belmont Stakes. The platform has been around since 2004, it is regulated and licensed in Panama City, and its users stand to benefit from numerous features such as $20 minimum deposits, multiple payment methods, and a great customer service.

4. Sports Betting.ag

Finally, the last on our list is Sports Betting.ag, which is a platform from 2003, which is regulated by the Panama Gambling Control Board whose license it currently holds. The platform is well-known in the US and Canada for its reliability, and it is one of the most popular go-to places for sports bets, including horse races. We talked about the platform in greater detail in our Sports Betting.ag review, so check it ous if you wish to try out this one.

Since the first race ever, Belmont Stakes has been taking place in Belmont Park in Elmont, NY.

The Belmont Stakes’ length is 12 furlongs, or 1.5 miles. On average, the race takes approximately 2:30.00 for a horse to complete. With that said, it should be noted that the 2020 Belmont Stakes race was considerably shorter, around 9 furlongs or 1 ⅛ miles.

You can follow the event replay on YouTube and similar free streaming websites. However, if you wish to watch the race live, you can only find it on NBC or NBC Sports app.

There are several ways to wager on Belmont Stakes, such as directly at racetracks, OTBs, International betting sites, or domestic online venues. By following our method, you will be using international betting sites.

Absolutely, both domestic online horse racing bets and international betting sites are options that will allow you to bet online. We, however, prefer the latter as it allows for the use of overseas racebooks that feature futures, props, parlays, and more.

If you wish to boost your chances of winning, the standard $2 WPS (Win-Place-Show) is the best option. However, while this is the way to almost certainly win, it is not the best way to win great amounts. You could score a lot more if you put a dollar on Bellmont trifecta, provided that you make the right call. Or, you can choose to box your bets, although you will need to pay attention to bankroll management in order for this method to work.

The 2021 Belmont Stakes was won by Essential Quality. The horse took first place, beating seven other competitors, and the time needed to complete the race was 2:27.11.

The Belmont Stakes record for the 12 furlongs was set in 1973 by Secretariat. Secretariat won by a record 31 lengths in a record time of 2:24.00. In the last 49 years, this record was not beaten by anyone, and some believe that it never will be.

Over the years, there have been plenty of records set for the current 12-furlong format, featuring the following victors and their times:

  • Secretariat (1973) – 2:24.00
  • Easy Goes (1989) – 2:26.00
  • Indy (1992) – 2:26.10
  • Risen Star (1988) – 2:26.40
  • Gallant Man (1957) – 2:26.60
  • Point Given (2001) – 2:26.80
  • Tabasco Cat (1994) – 2:26.80
  • Affirmed (1978) – 2:26.80
  • Crème Fraiche (1985) – 2:27.00
  • Go And Go (1990) – 2:27.20
  • Swale (1984) – 2:27.20
  • Stage Door Johnny (1968) – 2:27.20

Other than the Belmont Stakes, the event is also known as The Test of The Champion, and The Run for The Carnations.

This year’s Belmont Stakes purse was set at $1.5 million, which is also the amount set in 2021.

In order to view the event, gamblers will have to purchase tickets priced at $80 each.

The Belmont Stakes has its own official drink called the Belmont Jewel, which you can make yourself using the following recipe:

  • 5 ounces bourbon whiskey
  • 2 ounces lemonade
  • 1 ounce pomegranate juice
  • Lemon wedge, orange zest, or cherry garnish
