Will the PlayStation 4 Survive 2023?

With the PlayStation 4 facing a gradual decline in exclusivity, many suggest that the console could finally be on its last legs, and that 2023 could ring the death knell for Sony's beloved hardware. 

It's no secret that Sony has high hopes to steer just about every PS4 owner towards the new generation before the unavoidable collapse of the ex-gen hardware. It's also no secret that Sony is running out of ideas on how to port high-performance games over to the PS4, as a recent video of God of War Ragnarök struggling to play on a base console revealed. And let's be honest, even the cleanest hardware has struggled to keep up with some of the biggest titles lately; Final Fantasy VII Remake, for example, being just one of the many.

Of course, the guys over at PlayStation haven't officially shed their love for the PS4 just yet. But then, anyone can clearly see that the team in question is also in favor of removing the ex-gen console from the love triangle between the consumer and the PS5. As for when this eventual split will come to fruition is anybody's guess, but a 2023 window, in all honesty, wouldn't be totally out of the question, either.

At this point, it's hard to tell just how long the PS4 has before its relevance is whittled down to a minor portion of what it once boasted. It's very much the circle of life, and consoles do indeed need to die in order to lay the foundations for future devices. And since the PlayStation 4 has been around for the best part of nine years now, it does seem increasingly likely that its tenth anniversary could be its last before the PS5 takes over for good.

It Isn't Over…Yet

This isn't our way of saying you should abandon the PS4 and run for the hills, though, as the console itself still harbors plenty of fantastic games and all the perks to go with them. That said, if you do happen to have high hopes of the PS4 surviving through to 2024, then you may want to look away. The future of gaming is nigh, and honestly, we'd be lying if we said the PlayStation 4 will have a part in it.
