Ubisoft's classic franchise The Prince of Persia series has been left unused since their last big release, 2010's Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands. Fans of the series have been waiting for a brand new installment especially with a new generation of consoles on the horizon. In an announcement that shocked most people, Ubisoft did announce a new installment for the franchise but as a VR Escape Room with their newest title, Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time.

For those who are unaware, escape rooms are games where a group of people is locked in a room where they need to solve puzzles to escape before the timer runs out. Ubisoft Düsseldorf takes this concept and gives it a unique twist in the virtual reality landscape with the Dagger of Time experience. These location-based games will be debuting in more than 300 locations across the globe this spring. Teams of two, three or four need to work together and solve puzzles. The puzzles will require players to interact with objects in their vicinity, climb, and use certain powers, such as time control, which is a staple of the Prince of Persia franchise.

The story takes place between the Prince of Persia trilogy (Sands of Time, Warrior Within, The Two Thrones) where players are summoned to the Fortress of Time by Kaileena, the Empress of Time, to stop the evil Magi. Armed with the Dagger of Time, players have to reach the Hourglass Chamber to put an end to the Magi's nefarious plans. Dagger of Time will be playable for players of all ages and they do not need to be familiar with the previous Prince of Persia titles to play Dagger of Time.

This isn't Ubisoft's first location-based experience with their popular IPs. Partnering with Triotech, Ubisoft developed VR Maze, Assassin Creed: Temple of Anubis. Set in the world of Assassin's Creed: Origins, players take the role of Bayek, an Assassin in Ancient Egypt, as they explore the mysterious temple. “We are really excited to partner with Ubisoft on the well-known franchise Assassin’s Creed. Already more than 100 000 people have experienced our VR Maze all over the world, and this next chapter will definitely widen its appeal” commented Ernest Yale, Founder, and CEO of Triotech.
