The Last of Us Part 3: Is It Happening?

Updated on

Given the fact that The Last of Us Part II was the best-selling game of 2022, it's somewhat hard to believe that Naughty Dog isn't drawing up plans to boot up a third instalment.

It was only a few weeks back that rumors of a third part to the universally celebrated saga would be coming to PlayStation 5 in the distant future. Given the source of the rumor—a reputable “insider” who has made a number of plausible claims in the past—Naughty Dog fans were quick to have the wool pulled over their eyes. As it turns out, though, a third part may not actually be in development after all. Or at least, not at the time of writing, anyway.

The fact is, Naughty Dog doesn't seem to be overly keen on sharing any major details on the IP outside of its TV adaptation that is due to launch on HBO Max this January 15th. Apart from that, Neil Druckmann, director of The Last of Us, isn't about to let slip anything new. And as far as those aforementioned rumors go, Druckmann also seems adamant about shutting those down before the fire gets too high on them, too.

In a recent tweet, Druckmann made it clear that the guys over at Naughty Dog will have “lots of cool stuff” to share with fans over the duration of the year. The tweet also told fans to be “wary” of insider info, and that “much of it is false.” As for what this relates to is another question, though it makes sense that it would be referring to the recent rumor, given the timeframes.

The Last of Us Part 3: Yay or Nay?

Anyway, does this mean The Last of Us Part 3 isn't happening? Not at all. But for the time being, Druckmann clearly isn't ready to talk about its current status. With the majority of fans being preoccupied with the HBO adaptation, though, perhaps news surrounding the next instalment is being kept under wraps until the first season has come and gone. It's hard to say at this point, but we'll be sure to keep tabs on Naughty Dog over the coming months to see if anything enlightening comes to light.

So, what's your take? Do you think Naughty Dog will make a formal announcement about the next leg of Ellie's journey in 2023? Let us know over on our socials here or down in the comments below.
