The Explorator: Everything We Know

Remnant Games Studio, a relatively small firm based over in France, has come together to announce The Explorator, an all-new fantasy first-person shooter that casts its focus on the nautical realm of Atlantis. With vibrant yet wondrously quirky cell shaded visuals to boot, the game will look to mesh high-octane action with unusual backdrops bursting with character and monumentally powerful auras.

So, with the basics out of the way, what more do you need to know about it? Well, here's everything we've been able to gather on the matter, from its story to its gameplay elements. The Explorator: what, when, and above all, why Atlantis?

What Is The Explorator?

The Explorator is an upcoming “old school” first-person shooter for consoles and PC. Set in a cell shaded world oozing with colorful biomes and mysterious coves, players will embark on a dangerous quest to Ospolis, an island that supposedly houses the lost city of Atlantis beneath its core. In a bid to reach out to other explorers who have lost their way trying to locate the sacred city, you will venture forth and find the answer to that one all-important question — what really lies beneath the shores of Ospolis?

In Remnant Games' words: “The Explorator is a game inspired by oldschool FPS with a cell shading visual style, as an explorer you take your courage in both hands to set foot on the most dangerous island of the known world, Ospolis.”

From the looks of it, The Explorator will consist of not only eliminating monsters, but delving deep into the treasure-filled nexus of Atlantis itself—a forgotten kingdom that houses some of the most well-kept secrets in human history. But why Atlantis, and also, why monsters?

Story

In light of the newfound research based on the city of Atlantis being beneath the island of Ospolis, monsters and goblins have emerged from its underground nooks and crannies. But with its voyagers now trapped and miles away from home, you will need to step forth and cross Ospolis, to rescue its fortune seekers, and to locate answers that millions have failed to unearth.

“Legends say that the legendary city of Atlantis lies beneath this island, which has been suddenly overrun by goblins and monsters that have emerged from the bowels of the underground tunnels drilled by unwary explorers confident of finding this famous city,” the blurb adds. “You will have to cross the region zone by zone to get in touch with these explorers surrounded by demons and help them solve the mystery of the attack.”

Gameplay

So, what will the gameplay entail? Well, right now, we don't actually know a great deal. But having said that, Remnant Games Studio has gone on to say that it'll feature a semi-open world. And what's more, it'll implement a wide variety of dynamic regions for players to explore, with clues to decipher, and enemies to wade through.

According to the devs, weight management will also play a crucial role in the story. To this end, players will need to make tough decisions on what to collect, purchase, and ultimately carry during their expeditions. Because apparently—and it sort of makes sense—you won't be able to bring everything with you. So, the question here is this: which items will serve you well during your greatest times of need? It's certainly a long way to Atlantis, that's for sure.

Development

Remnant Games Studio, a small outfit based over in La Garde, France, first shed light on The Explorator on April 5, 2023, at which point it painted the general aesthetic of the game via a short but surprisingly insightful preview trailer. Since making the formal announcement, little else has been mentioned, other than the fact the game is being built in Unity, and that it'll be heading to Xbox and PC. A release date has still not been announced, though one can only hope it'll be set in stone at some point this year.

While it's all well and good keeping tabs on its site, you can actually find a few more details in the general discussion over on its Steam handle here. But if anything even remotely enlightening comes to light ahead of its launch, we'll be sure to let you know.

The Explorator Trailer

So, has The Explorator caught your eye yet? If so, then you're in luck, as Remnant Games Studio did in fact post a trailer for the game earlier this month. And not just a generic cinematic, either—but a full-fledged sneak preview that also outlined the setting and even a few gameplay features, too. Need we say more? You can see it for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

The Explorator will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam at some point in the near future. A release date has yet to be announced, as is the decision whether or not to bring the fantasy game to PlayStation 5. If it does shed its Microsoft skin, though, then chances are it won't be until after the initial launch. The same goes for Switch, too.

Perhaps it's too early to say, but from what we've caught so far, it appears The Explorator won't be launching with any special editions in mind. Nevertheless, you can go ahead and add it to your wishlist over on Steam here. You can also find it on the Microsoft Store.
