If you’re one of the few people who departed Dvora Studio’s The Coma 2: Vicious Sister with far more questions than answers, then you’re in luck — The Coma 2B: Catacomb will finally shed light on some of those unwritten mysteries in its upcoming journey. As it turns out, the newly formed horror will cement the gaps between the first and second game, and will serve as a “story bridge of all series,” according to the devs. So, if you’re one for assuring that no stone gets left unturned, then you’ll definitely want to consider adding this one to your to-do list.

The good news is, fans of the series won’t have to wait all that long to get their hands on the next layer in the Korean franchise; it’s currently due to launch in Q3 2024, thankfully. Until that time comes, however, here’s everything else that you should know about it.

What Is The Coma 2B: Catacomb?

The Coma 2B: Catacomb is a side-scrolling mystery-horror game, and a continuation of its previous incarnation, The Coma. Apparently, the game will serve as the glue between both installments, and will once again slot its players into the shoes of series protagonist, Youngho Choi. As the ill-fortuned survivor, you will need to confront the Vicious Sister—a horrifying enemy who has the power to manipulate and sabotage an alternate reality known as The Coma, otherwise known as the mirror dimension.

In the words of its faithful founders, “The Coma 2B: Catacomb is a Korean survival horror adventure. It is a back story of the previous game The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters, and a story bridge of all series. You are back in game as Youngho Choi, the main protagonist of The Coma, you must venture from the mirror dimension of reality to survive. What happened between The Coma and The Coma 2? The answer is in here.”

It goes without saying at this point, but if you haven’t found the time to experience the first and second entries in the series yet, then you might struggle to make heads or tails of the upcoming episode. With that said, as the upcoming chapter isn’t due out for a fair while, you should have plenty of time to iron over the creases and bring yourself up to speed on the lore.

Story

Catacomb will take place in the aftermath of the first game’s conclusion, at which point the story saw our protagonist escape from the clutches of the mirror dimension and return to the normal world. According to the devs, though, the Vicious Sister—the enemy from the other extensions in the series—isn’t quite done with rustling up some trouble from beyond the veil.

“With only the hope of escaping from the Vicious Sister’s hands, Youngho collects the pages of Yaesol’s notes to find a powerful relic sword that can be used against the Vicious Sister,” the game’s blurb adds. “He never expected to find a huge facility beneath Dokaebi Market! Things get complicated when an unwanted invader comes to the mirror dimension, and a new character with ties to Yaesol appears to help Youngho. Will Youngho be able to defeat the Vicious Sister?”

Gameplay

From the looks of the footage that we’ve seen so far, Catacomb won’t deviate all that far from the original design. Like before, the game will feature a side-scrolling blueprint that contains a mixture of action, stealth, and generic exploration elements. Interestingly enough, it will also allow players to “encounter an engaging cast of characters, solve puzzles, discover revealing clues, and fight for survival against a relentless psycho.”

“Running and wielding your flashlight makes you an easy target,” the description adds. “You must precariously balance the urgency of exploration with your absolute need to survive!”

In addition to all of the above components, Catacomb will also feature a hearty selection of tools, resources, and valuable upgrades to collect. Naturally, all of this will be in an array of “vibrant, hand-illustrated in-game visuals and comic strips.”

Development

The Coma 2B: Catacomb is a product of Dvora Studio, a Korea-based outfit that’s been working on the series for the best part of a decade or so. The next leg of the journey, which will look to cement the gaps between the first and second chapters’ storylines, is currently due to arrive on PC as early as Q3 2024. If you’re interested in keeping tabs on the game’s ongoing development, then be sure to check in with the team over on their Discord server here.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

The Coma 2B: Catacomb will be launching at some stage in Q3 2024 on PC via Steam. Similar to its predecessors, the upcoming game isn’t likely to arrive on consoles anytime in the near future. However, given the fact that the earlier chapters did go on to release on both Xbox and PlayStation, it could be that Catacomb finds its way to consoles at some point in early 2025.

Up until this point, neither Dvora Studio nor its publisher Headup Games have shed light on any special or deluxe editions of Catacomb. If anything of the sort does come to light, then either of the two firms are likely to promote it at some point in Q2 2024. Fingers crossed, anyway.
