NBA 2K24 Is One of the Worst Games of 2023

NBA 2K24

It might come as a bit of a shock, but the harsh truth is, NBA 2K24 just isn’t a good game. It’s a game, to a certain extent at least, but for the most part, it really is just a cheap rehash of 2K23 — and people are beginning to call 2K out for it, as well.

As it currently stands, NBA 2K24 has an “overwhelmingly negative” review score on Steam, with 91% of players slating it as one of the worst games of the year, period. And if this isn’t disappointing enough, it’s also worth pointing out that 2K voluntarily skimped out on the next-gen version for PC—a move that has caused an insane amount of post-launch backlash. That’s only the icing on the cake, too, believe it or not.

What Went Wrong?

So, why all the hate? Well, for starters, 2K24 doesn’t have the same story-driven MyCareer mode that has featured in every single previous iteration to date. Turns out, there’s a communal area to scoot around in between games, but for the most part, it’s merely the case of having fledgling ballers skateboard between spots tackling various textureless bouts. Not good.

Aside from the story (or lack of such), there’s also the microtransactions—a feature that has single-handedly crushed the trust between 2K and the actual consumer. Although it’s a $70 game, most players are struggling to make headway on the competition without having to pour some amount of virtual currency into acquiring the necessary upgrades needed to progress. So, a pay-to-win sort of thing, then? Well, it certainly seems that way.

Gameplay-wise, 2K24 isn’t that bad. Having said that, a lot of die-hard fans are claiming that it’s basically the same as 2K23, but with a sleeker skin and a couple of mechanical improvements to boot. Not that this comes as much of a surprise, though, what with 2K being known for its lazy reboots and continuations. Here’s hoping, though, that with a little scrub and polish, 2K is able to wring out those poor reviews and regain the trust of its lifelong followers.

You can get your hands on a copy of NBA 2K24 on all major platforms today.
