Mordhau

Do you love Battlefield? Are you a fan of medieval combat? Does kicking a guy off his high horse (literally) sound enticing to you? If it does, you better sit back and relax because we’ve got something special lined up for you. Some may already have had their fun with Mordhau, having launched on PC platforms via Steam on April 29, 2019. But, the hype has since shot through the roof on the internet, so much so that developer Triternion has announced a PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One version of Mordhau coming soon on July 12, 2023.

Don’t worry about joining the party a little later than others. Mordhau veteran players are especially welcoming to new players, offering to teach you the ropes for free and engage in goofy banter through it all. The Mordhau fanbase is so overwhelmingly cool it’s clear how much they want the game to succeed. But before grabbing a copy for your console, you’re probably wondering what Mordhau’s story, gameplay, editions, and more are. So, we’ve compiled the answers you need in our Mordhau: Everything We Know article. Come along.

What is Mordhau?

Mordhau

Mordhau is a multiplayer medieval melee action game that plays in both first and third-person perspectives. Players engage in hand-to-hand combat, siege engines, and mounted combat using weapons as varied as spears, shields, hammers, bows, swords, and more. If you like to fight in close quarters, you can use a bunch of moves at your disposal, including kicks, dodges, clocks, parrying, stabbing, directional strikes, and more.

The game places a strong emphasis on skill-based combat. Specifically, a battle royale mode that can host up to 64 players at a time. However, you can jump into the duel, horde, invasion, frontline, deathmatch, and other modes, too. Taking the role of a mercenary, your goal is to kill (or be killed), keeping track of your stamina and health bars. Goes without saying that sticking with your teammates is the best way to survive and win, which contributes to a strong community, too.

Story

Mordhau’s premise is simple. Join a battlefield of up to 64 players set within the medieval period. Though fictional, Mordhau employs a commendable level of realism, so it might pass for a medieval simulation of sorts. The battles promise a conniving level of intensity. Yet, amid the brutality lies a beautiful sense of satisfying and fantastic combat.

Gameplay

The best part about playing Mordhau that tons of players have been vocal about online is the combat system. Picture the huge variety of weapons at your disposal and their consequent strengths and weaknesses. You’ll have to choose your weapon wisely, carefully studying when and where to unleash them.

You may mount a horse and attack opponents Vikings-style. Yet, riding on horseback opens you up to incomparable vulnerability. Siege weapons, on the other hand, are perfect for crowd control or literal assaults on castles. However, they’re often bulky and can easily put a target on your back. Swords cut through flesh easy peasy. Enemies wearing heavy armor, though, may need something a little heavier. A hammer or club, perhaps.

There’s an impressive level of strategy that opens up the game not just to be combat-focused but also engaging and tactical. When playing on PC, even the mouse movement determines how wide of an AOE damage you’ll achieve or which areas of the body you strike first. It’s interesting to see how much depth controllers can add to Mordhau

Users will have the freedom to customize nearly all aspects of their character, from their boots to helmets to gloves to arms and more. They can also choose from a Viking, a crusader, or a sharpshooting archer.

Then there’s teamwork, a very important part of Mordhau’s gameplay. On your own, you may kill a bunch of enemies. However, to survive through to the end, you’ll need to work together. Because ultimately, Mordhau is far much more than simply killing a few enemies. Rather, claiming new territories and relying on your teammates to buy you precious time to heal.

Development

Originally a janky community project, Mordhau’s developing team raised enough capital during a Kickstarter campaign held in 2017 to finally launch a fully-fledged game in April 2019. Unfortunately, Mordhau only launched on PC platforms via Steam. But Mordhau was a surprise hit and such a resounding success that a few years later, console users will finally get a taste of the game.

For a while, Mordhau has been in development for consoles. Now, we can confirm that Slovenian studio, Triternion, will launch Mordhau for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms on July 12, 2023.

Courtesy of IGN, you can watch Mordhau’s Xbox and PlayStation release date trailer here. It looks gory, lavish, and as chaotic as we expect, with commentaries like “tough, medieval magic, beautiful” displayed on the screen. One can only hope that the final game delivers, too.
