Invincible: Guarding the Globe — Everything We Know

Ubisoft has announced its plans to adapt hit comic book series Invincible into a video game…for Android and iOS. That’s right, not consoles or PC, but mobile, a niche market that Ubisoft has shown every intention of exploiting ever since it dropped the ball on Assassin’s Creed Codename JadeThis time, however, the studio won’t be venturing into the realm of historical fiction, but the world of “idle” RPGs, as it goes. And if the so-called Invincible: Guarding the Globe is everything Ubisoft claims it to be, then weirdly, it should be a pretty solid addition to the handheld market.

So, what more do we know about the upcoming video game adaptation of Invincible? Will it feature all the same characters and high-octane action as the anime and comic book series? Here’s everything we can tell you about it, based on the information Ubisoft Barcelona has provided to date.

What Is Invincible: Guarding the Globe?

To make it clear, Invincible: Guarding the Globe is an upcoming idle RPG set in the same universe as the Invincible series, as depicted in Skybound Entertainment’s comic books and its Prime Video adaptation. Much like the original material, the idle venture will see players embarking on a series of quests around the globe, collecting characters, and of course, springing into action over a slew of adrenaline-fueled battles as the familiar faces of the famed Global Defense Agency.

Invincible: Guarding the Globe is a mobile squad RPG set in the Invincible universe featuring a storyline brand new to the series,” the description reads. “The first Invincible mobile game, offering graphic multi-battle action, character collection, squad management, idle features and super-powered visuals.”

Story

According to the devs, Guarding the Globe will feature an entirely new story set in the same universe as the comic books and Prime Video series. In the latest episode, the heroes will be faced with taking down a new type of threat; clones, as it turns out, who resemble none other than Invincible himself.

Gameplay

Guarding the Globe will look to bring the best of gacha-based mechanics with traditional RPG elements. As an overseer of sorts, players will be tasked with recruiting their own characters from the series, gaining XP through various battles, and essentially boosting their skills and attributes in order to formulate the perfect squad. Add the fact that there’ll also be seasonal events and daily quests to complete, and you’ve basically got yourself a bread and butter mobile RPG.

“Recruit a team of iconic characters from the Invincible comics and show,” the game’s description adds. “From obvious all-time favorites like Invincible and Atom Eve, to the notorious Flaxans, Mauler Twins and more. Gain battle experience to level up your characters, combining clones to increase their rank and achieve new heights of strength, power, and overall badassery.”

“Assemble your team and deploy them into blood-soaked action RPG battle,” it continues. “Each squad member has a role: Attacker, Defender, or Support.
It’s up to you to choose the best combo for each encounter. During combat, each member of your team can unleash their own powerful ultimate ability to smash and/or rip the enemy to a pulp and/or shreds and claim victory.”

In addition to the single-player adventure, Guarding the Globe will also make room for a co-op mode, which will allow several players to drop in and battle for loot and XP.

“Always good to have a little extra padding!” the blurb expands. “Send your team into battle fully equipped with four categories of gear: chestwear, legwear, footwear and gloves. Add special, unique gear known as artifacts for extra stat bonuses or passive effects.
Each piece of gear has a rarity level and can be upgraded to enhance its benefit even further.”

Development

Ubisoft Barcelona announced its partnership with Skybound Entertainment earlier this month, after which the two teams revealed a short animated trailer (more on that shortly) via its streaming handles. Since lifting that particular veil, Ubisoft has opened up the floodgates for pre-launch registrations. Those who sign up via their website will receive the following items:

  • Burger Mart Burger
  • 2 Hero Dossiers
  • 35,000 Hero XP
  • 50,000 GDA Chips

“It's been so exciting watching the Invincible universe evolve from comic book to TV series, and now to a video game,” said Robert Kirkman, chairman and chief creative officer at Skybound Entertainment. “Invincible being a multi-hero narrative, I love that we've made the game into a multiplayer RPG and that you can fight numerous battles simultaneously. Ubisoft did an incredible job seamlessly recreating Invincible for the small screen.”

Invincible: Guarding the Globe - Official Announcement Trailer

Ubisoft teased Invincible: Guarding the Globe via short animated trailer earlier this week. Granted, it isn’t all that in-depth, and it doesn’t exactly delve all that deep into its gameplay features, either. That being said, a trailer is a trailer — and you can catch a glimpse of it for yourself in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

While Ubisoft has yet to formally announce a release date for Invincible: Guarding the Globe, the general consensus seems to favor a rough Q4 2023 window. Honestly though, it’s hard to say exactly when it’ll release at this point, as the devs have been pretty coy about the whole thing. Whatever the case may be, those interested in the game will be able to get their hands on it from either the App Store or the Play Store on day one. It’ll be free-to-play, too, so no need to worry about forking over any extra funds, either.

Again, as it’s a mobile game through and through, the chances of it arriving on consoles or PC seems highly unlikely at this moment in time. But who knows? Maybe Skybound Entertainment will be so thrilled with its debut on Android and iOS, that it could open up a few more doorways a little later down the line? It’s a possibility, albeit a rather slim one.

Wherever it is you stand on the whole thing, you can check in with the devs over on their joint social feed for all the latest updates here. If anything changes ahead of its launch, we’ll be sure to fill you in on all the key details right here on gaming.net.
